About the position

The Water Distribution Inspector is responsible for performing semi-skilled work related to water distribution projects, including the inspection of contractors' work on water mains and service laterals. This role involves assisting in various tasks such as flushing, sterilization, and sample collection for new mains, and requires close collaboration with the Water Distribution Inspector II. The position is exempt from snow removal duties but may involve responding to water distribution emergencies throughout the year. During slower construction periods, the inspector may assist the Water Distribution crew with utility work.

Responsibilities

• Inspect the work of contractors installing water mains and service laterals.
• Assist in pressure tests, chlorinations, flushings, and sampling of newly installed water mains.
• Upgrade water main distribution maps for the GIS system.
• Operate water line locators and metal detectors to locate mains and related facilities.
• Perform minor repairs on buffalo boxes, valve boxes, and hydrants.
• Maintain detailed documentation of daily job-related tasks.
• Assist with plan review and walkthrough inspections as needed.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• Two years of experience in construction, public works maintenance and repair, or a related field.
• Valid Illinois Class A driver's license within 6 months of hire.

Nice-to-haves

• Knowledge of methods and procedures used in the Water Distribution Division.
• Familiarity with the hazards and safety precautions connected with water maintenance and repair practices.
