About the position

The City of Escondido is seeking a Water Distribution Technician I/II to join its Utilities Department/Water Division. This role involves performing a variety of semi-skilled and manual tasks related to the maintenance, installation, and repair of the city's water distribution system, ensuring the delivery of safe drinking water to the public. The position offers opportunities for advancement based on demonstrated proficiency and the acquisition of necessary licenses and certifications.

Responsibilities

  • Perform general repairs related to the City's water distribution system, including repairing broken water lines and performing hot taps under pressure.
  • Install and maintain appurtenances associated with the water distribution system, including fire hydrants and blow-off valves.
  • Clean and maintain properties related to the water system, including reservoirs and pump stations.
  • Maintain valves used to operate the water system and perform maintenance on gate and butterfly type lines and hydrant valves.
  • Perform maintenance duties related to lakes and dams, including inspections and water sample analysis.
  • Conduct meter maintenance and exchange duties, including repairs and installations of new meter service lines.
  • Perform utility locates and mark the location of underground City water lines.
  • Flush water lines to ensure water quality and perform chlorine level testing.
  • Repair asphalt and concrete after repairs to the water distribution system.
  • Operate various vehicles and equipment, including service trucks and backhoes, and perform safety checks on equipment.
  • Set traffic control devices to ensure safety during work operations.
  • Provide customer service and respond to inquiries and complaints from the public regarding water distribution issues.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • One year of general maintenance or construction experience for Water Distribution Technician I; one to two years for Technician II.
  • Possession of a valid Class C driver's license; must obtain a Class A commercial driver's permit within six months and a Class A license within the probationary period.
  • CPR certification and other job-related certifications required or provided by the City.
  • For Technician II, possession of a valid Grade 2 Water Distribution Operator certificate.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in pipe laying is highly desirable.
  • Backhoe operation certification.
  • Trenching and shoring certification.
