About the position

The Water Operations Trainee position is an entry-level role within the City of Vernon's Public Utilities Department, designed for individuals to learn and assist in the maintenance and repair of the city's water distribution systems. Under close supervision, trainees will engage in various operational activities, including manual labor, equipment operation, and routine inspections, while gaining valuable experience in water system operations.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the installation of new fire hydrants, water service, and fire service connections.
  • Break out and excavate, removing asphalt, concrete, and dirt.
  • Set up and remove traffic control.
  • Operate various heavy equipment and motorized vehicles.
  • Assist with the repair and maintenance of water service connections, upgrades, and meter replacement.
  • Assist with water service turn off and turn on activities.
  • Perform confined space entry to water service vaults, reservoirs, and stormwater sumps.
  • Assist with the repair and maintenance of fire hydrants.
  • Assist with water distribution system leak repairs and maintenance activities.
  • Assist with the repair and maintenance of water production wells, booster pumps, reservoirs, and water facilities.
  • Perform routine water facility inspections and monitor chlorine levels.
  • Collect water and electric reads, input data, and prepare water production reports.
  • Respond to after-hour emergency calls as needed.
  • Assist in responding to Dig Alert tickets and update logs.
  • Inspect tools and City vehicles to ensure they are clean and in safe working order.
  • Perform meter reading for utility billing.
  • Load and unload materials, equipment, and supplies.
  • Install barricades and flashers for public safety purposes.
  • Contribute to a safety-conscious work environment by following established procedures.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • One year of construction, repair, and maintenance experience related to mechanical equipment, underground utility installation, or water distribution systems repair and maintenance work.
  • One year of college-level coursework or trade school in water distribution, water treatment, or a related field may substitute for one year of experience.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with heavy equipment operation.
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements for water utilities.
  • Familiarity with customer service standards and protocols.
