About the position

The Water Services Department's Laboratory Services Section engages in the analysis of water and wastewater samples to ensure compliance with federal, state and local environmental regulatory requirements. The Water Services Department is seeking a Chemist II to provide first line supervision including planning, assigning, and supervising the work of laboratory personnel involved in the chemical, biochemical, and/or microbiological examination of water or wastewater. This is a hands-on, bench-level supervisory position that requires an ability to communicate and interact effectively with a broad cross section of technical, professional, and operational staff. Some groups are certified under Arizona Department of Health Services and NELAP accreditation standards. Some positions work in conjunction with Water or Wastewater Treatment Division process control specialists and management to monitor and improve the treatment process efficiency of water or wastewater treatment plants. Chemists II are responsible for: * Interpreting results, * Writing comprehensive analytical reports, * Maintaining compliance with policies and procedures as required under state and federal regulations to ensure analytical quality; * Providing the instrumental, technical, and analytical expertise required to support routine analysis of drinking water samples and wastewater samples for permitting under EPA SDWA, AZPDES, NPDES and Industrial Pretreatment; * Sample preparation and analysis in the event of an emergency or unusual water quality event.

Requirements

  • Three years of supervisory work in the public health or chemical laboratory field, or three years at the level of Chemist I within the City of Phoenix
  • Bachelor's degree in chemistry, microbiology, environmental sciences, or a related field
  • Individuals must be physically capable of operating vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record
  • Moving objects weighing up to 25 pounds may be required

  • Basic maintenance and troubleshooting of laboratory equipment and instruments
  • Preparing, revising, and ensuring update of Laboratory Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) by annual due dates
  • Entering and reviewing laboratory analysis data using Laboratory Information Management System, LIMS
  • Evaluating long-range staffing and instrumentation needs and providing input for annual budget
  • Providing monthly status reports on Water Process Labs project activities and service levels
  • Schedule preparation by providing input and coordination in lab coverage
