About the position

The City of Colton has an immediate opening as a Water Production Operator I or II. The city will accept the first 75 applications or open until January 10, 2025, whichever comes first. This recruitment will be used for current and future vacancies. Depending on qualifications, candidates may be hired at a level I or II. Salaries per month are: I - $4,564.77 - $5,548.53; II - $5,072.88 - $6,166.14. Under direct supervision, the operator performs a variety of semi-skilled and limited skilled maintenance duties and activities, ensuring compliance with Federal and State regulations and drinking water standards concerning water quality and treatment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform a variety of semi-skilled and limited skilled maintenance of valves, pumps, wells, booster stations, and reservoirs.
  • Monitor and operate the telemetry system to achieve optimum performance of the wells, booster stations, and reservoirs.
  • Assist with inspections and certify commercial and industrial facilities for Certificate of Occupancy requirements for the Water Division.
  • Collect samples from water distribution source(s) and facilities; analyze sample data and produce standard reports on a monthly and annual basis.
  • Assist with production of consumer confidence reports as required by Federal or State statutes.
  • Monitor, operate, and maintain automatic chlorinators and perform water quality sampling to ensure safe, clean, and potable water for customers.
  • Inspect, service, and maintain electrical, radio, telemetry, hydraulic, and mechanical systems.
  • Assist in the operation and maintenance of construction equipment and/or machinery including pumping equipment, well and boosters.
  • Check chlorine system; take water samples throughout the system on an as-needed basis and perform special well samplings as needed.
  • Prepare water samples for testing and processing.
  • Monitor and scan telemetry system for reservoir and well activity and status.
  • Assist in maintaining the upkeep of well sites, booster stations, pressure reducing valve (PRV) stations on a regular basis.
  • Maintain records of installations and repairs of treatment equipment.
  • Assist in pipefitting and fabrication work as necessary.
  • Effectively use and maintain field test kits and equipment.
  • Assist in maintaining accurate records.
  • Interpret and apply codes, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Maintain prompt and regular attendance.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • For Production Operator I: One (1) year of experience working in water distribution and/or treatment plant operations involving potable water production, treatment, storage, or a related field.
  • For Production Operator II: Two (2) years of experience working in water distribution and/or treatment plant operations involving potable water production, treatment, and storage.
  • Possession of a valid California Class 'C' driver's license issued by the California State Department of Motor Vehicles and good driving record.
  • For Production Operator I: Possession of a California State Water Resources Control Board Grade I Water Distribution Operator Certificate is required.
  • For Production Operator I: Possession of a California State Water Resources Control Board Grade I Water Treatment Operator Certificate is required within six (6) months of appointment.
  • For Production Operator II: Possession of a State Water Resources Control Board Grade II Water Distribution Operator Certificate is required.
  • For Production Operator II: Possession of a State Water Resources Control Board Grade II Water Treatment Operator Certificate is required.
