About the position

The Water Protection Specialist I is responsible for performing source water protection activities and monitoring City watershed properties. This role involves ensuring the safety and proper use of these properties, responding to public inquiries, and conducting investigations related to pollution and unauthorized use. The specialist will also provide technical support for natural resource management and assist in public education efforts.

Responsibilities

  • Identify hazardous, unlawful, and unauthorized use of City watershed properties by patrolling land and water areas.
  • Respond to public inquiries concerning the utilization of City watershed properties and applicable laws.
  • Monitor public utilization of City reservoirs and park land to ensure water protection and public safety.
  • Provide field and technical support with natural resources and land stewardship management activities.
  • Investigate and document pollution sources and collect evidence and samples as necessary.
  • Meet with landowners adjacent to the City's watershed properties to assist with encroachment issues.
  • Perform light preventative and corrective maintenance on City vehicles and water-analysis instruments.
  • Compile reports of investigations, issues warnings, and collect findings for action taken.
  • Notify local law enforcement agencies as necessary for compliance assistance.
  • Use hand tools or other equipment to assist in the maintenance of City watershed properties.
  • Assist with the creation and implementation of public education and outreach programs.
  • Facilitate activities conducted on watershed properties with emergency services or regulatory agencies.
  • Use instruments to monitor and record land and water data.

Requirements

  • Significant college coursework in natural resources, environmental science, forestry, park management, wildlife management, or a closely related field.
  • One year of field experience in natural resource conservation, protection, or restoration may substitute for the required education.
  • Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license.
  • Must possess a valid Ohio Boaters Education Certificate by the completion of the probationary period.
