About the position

The position involves collecting a variety of marine water column and sediment samples and oceanographic circulation data. The role requires performing complex in-situ analyses and conducting oceanographic field surveys and investigations, along with other related duties as required. The current vacancy is with the Department of Environmental Services, Environmental Quality Division, located at Sand Island Wastewater Treatment Plant. Responsibilities include collecting marine water column samples in accordance with Federal and State guidelines, collecting sediment samples by dredging or SCUBA diving, and performing complex in-situ analyses of marine water column samples. The position also involves documenting sampling processes and procedures to ensure compliance with Federal and State standards, calibrating monitoring equipment, collecting ocean circulation data, deploying current meters and drogues, and conducting oceanographic field surveys. The role requires using SCUBA equipment to inspect sewage outfalls and other marine discharges, arranging for maintenance and repair of monitoring vessels and equipment, and participating in planning specific sampling activities. The work schedule is Monday to Friday from 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., with potential weekend and holiday work.

Responsibilities

  • Collect marine water column samples in accordance with Federal and State guidelines.
  • Collect sediment samples by dredging or SCUBA diving.
  • Perform complex in-situ analyses of marine water column samples.
  • Document sampling processes and procedures to assure acceptability for Federal and State standards.
  • Calibrate monitoring equipment to assure accuracy of readings.
  • Collect ocean circulation data.
  • Deploy current meters, drogues, and other collected data and sample collection procedures.
  • Conduct oceanographic field surveys and investigations.
  • Inspect sewage outfalls and other marine discharges using SCUBA equipment.
  • Arrange for and perform periodic maintenance and repair of monitoring vessel, boats, hydraulic winches, diving, and other on-board equipment.
  • Participate in preparing plans for specific sampling activity in accordance with Federal and State requirements.
  • Assist in coordinating sampling cruises with departmental personnel or other agencies.
  • Operate a motor vehicle to commute to boat docking areas and to transport samples.
  • May operate monitoring vessel or other boats.

Requirements

  • Must be a citizen, national, or permanent resident alien of the United States or a non-citizen eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment.
  • Equivalent to graduation from high school.
  • Two years of experience in collecting and analyzing oceanographic, laboratory, or related data.
  • Valid driver's license (Type 3/automobile) prior to appointment.
  • Valid basic SCUBA certificate at time of application.
