About the position

The Water Quality Technician is responsible for ensuring the safety and quality of drinking water through sampling and analysis from various sources, including water distribution systems and treatment plants. This role involves responding to customer inquiries, maintaining contamination response preparedness, and ensuring compliance with relevant regulations.

Responsibilities

• Collects water samples in accordance with the Safe Drinking Water Act and other applicable regulations.
• Handles customer complaints and coordinates sampling logistics.
• Conducts operational sampling at water filtration plants and distribution sites.
• Maintains online water quality monitoring instruments and performs routine inspections and calibrations.
• Serves as a member of the Contamination Rapid Response Team (CRRT).
• Prepares reagents and standards for analyses and maintains accurate records.
• Prepares sample bottles for field work according to method requirements.
• Maintains compliance with QA/QC and safety requirements.
• Creates accurate records of all analytical work.
• Cross trains in other water quality disciplines.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree with 2+ years of experience in utility or governmental operations in the environmental field, or an Associate's degree with 4+ years of experience, or a High School diploma with 5+ years of experience.
• Knowledge of drinking water treatment processes and water quality monitoring.
• Understanding of federal, state, and local laws governing drinking water monitoring.
• Knowledge of chemistry and microbiology principles and techniques.
• Ability to interpret data and identify water quality problems.

Nice-to-haves

• Possession of MDE Water Sampler certification.
• 3+ years of water quality sampling and analysis experience in a water utility.
