About the position

The Water Resources/Drainage Engineering Associate III position at RS&H is a full-time role based in the St. Charles, IL office, focusing on stormwater management, drainage design, hydrologic and hydraulic modeling, water quality design, environmental permitting, and sustainability practices. This role involves applying accepted and innovative water resources engineering practices to a diverse range of clients, including IDOT, state transportation agencies, regional airports, and local agencies. The Associate will be responsible for analyzing and interpreting data, performing design analyses, planning, impact studies, and cost analyses, as well as ensuring compliance with design requirements, site selection, and permitting requirements. In this position, the Associate will design complete projects, systems, components, or processes, and prepare comprehensive project documents, engineering analyses, and reports. The role requires formulating and solving problems with innovative solutions while collaborating with the water resources engineering group and other engineering disciplines. The Associate may also provide technical guidance and assign tasks to junior and support staff throughout the project duration. Additionally, the role may involve managing discipline and small multidisciplinary teams, ensuring adherence to company and project contractual requirements, and coordinating with clients to determine objectives and deliver quality results. Other duties may be assigned as necessary, all within the scope of practice.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze and interpret data related to stormwater management and drainage design.
  • Perform analyses of design, planning, and impact studies, including cost analyses and permitting requirements.
  • Design complete projects, systems, components, or processes and prepare project documents, engineering analyses, and reports.
  • Prepare project specifications, calculations, exhibits, and complete project documents.
  • Formulate and solve engineering problems with innovative solutions.
  • Collaborate with the water resources engineering group and other engineering disciplines.
  • Provide technical guidance and assign tasks to junior and support staff during project duration.
  • Manage discipline and small multidisciplinary teams, ensuring adherence to company and project contractual requirements.
  • Coordinate with clients to determine objectives and provide quality deliverables.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned within the scope of practice.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited program or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of 7 years relevant experience in water resources engineering.
  • Certification as a Professional Engineer (PE) or eligibility to obtain PE.
  • Proficient in production software and construction document production.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively interact with and build strong relationships with clients, customers, contractors, and other key stakeholders.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with watershed delineation and determination of hydrological parameters.
  • Experience with hydrologic and hydraulic modeling (HEC-HMS, HY-8, HEC-RAS, SMS SRH-2D, SWMM, and/or ICPR/Stormwise).
  • Experience in drainage analysis and design using Geopak Drainage and Subsurface Utilities Design and Analysis (SUDA) for Open Roads Designer (ORD).
  • Proficiency in CADD (MicroStation SS10, ORD, and/or Civil 3D).
  • Experience with ArcGIS for water resources projects.
  • Experience in plans, specifications, and estimates production.
  • Knowledge of erosion and sediment control and best management practices.
