About the position

Join our Roadway Hydraulics team at the Nebraska Department of Transportation, where we are committed to ensuring the sustainable management and development of our state's water resources. We are looking for a passionate and skilled engineer to help us tackle the challenges of modern water management as it relates to highway infrastructure. As a Water Resources Engineer, you will play a crucial role in planning, designing, and implementing highway drainage design projects. You will also serve as a technical resource specializing in highway drainage. This position is ideal for both recent graduates and experienced engineers who are enthusiastic about contributing to the efficient and sustainable management of water resources. Whether you have expertise in hydraulics or hydrology, or are eager to learn and develop in this field, we encourage you to apply.

Responsibilities

  • Design and analyze hydraulic structures such as culverts, storm sewer systems, stormwater treatment facilities, detention basins, energy dissipators etc.
  • Conduct hydrologic studies to anticipate peak flows.
  • Provide technical support and guidance on hydraulic and hydrologic matters to stakeholders and other departments.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including environmental scientists, transportation engineers, structural engineers etc.
  • Conduct floodplain analyses where NDOT highway projects encroach on a floodplain.
  • Serve on Technical Advisory Committees for proposed hydrology and hydraulic research projects and help develop ideas and general Statements of Need for research proposals.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline.
  • Must possess a Professional Engineer (P.E.) license at the time of application and be licensed by the Nebraska Board of Engineers and Architects at the time of employment or be able to obtain such license within 90 days of employment (for Professional Engineer I).
  • Must obtain Engineer Intern Enrollment (Engineering in Training Certification) within one year of employment (for Engineer level).

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a related engineering field.
  • An emphasis in water resources is preferred but not required.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or ability to obtain one within a specified period.
  • Experience with hydrology methods and culvert hydraulics.
  • Experience with GIS applications and data analysis is an advantage.
