About the position

The Utility Worker in the Water Services Division of the City of Belton, MO, is responsible for performing skilled cleaning, repair, inspection, and maintenance work on the city's water and sewer systems. This role involves operating various equipment for the construction, repair, and maintenance of water and wastewater facilities, ensuring the integrity and functionality of the city's water treatment and distribution systems.

Responsibilities

  • Perform sewer line, pump station, and point repair and maintenance including cleaning and root cutting with the Jet-Vac truck.
  • Operate a variety of equipment and machinery in performing tasks related to sewer and water maintenance.
  • Troubleshoot, clean, repair, and replace vacuum pumps, plumbing, probes, floats, and water separators.
  • Change pump seals and remove pump impeller obstructions.
  • Vacuum wet wells and troubleshoot and repair electrical systems.
  • Repair manholes and replace damaged lids, frames, and seals with pressure grout.
  • Conduct televising of sewer mains for obstructions and damage.
  • Dig ditches and construct safety shoring to repair sewer mains.
  • Monitor creeks and streams for pollution and dumping.
  • Assist the Engineering Department on sewer line installation and inspection.
  • Repair and construct concrete encasements around sewer mains in creeks.
  • Repair water breaks and perform water taps.
  • Respond to customer complaints and concerns regarding water services.
  • Take water samples and forward them to the State for testing.
  • Inspect fire hydrants and clean pump stations.
  • Train new employees as needed and maintain all water division properties.
  • Respond to odor calls from residents and perform minor facility upkeep and repairs.
  • Plow snow, mow, weed, and perform tree removal around facilities and fire hydrants.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Possession of a valid Class B State Commercial Driver's License with air brakes within six months of hire.
  • Wastewater Class D License and Distribution System Operator III License may be required within a specific time period after hire.
  • Knowledge of operations, services, and activities of a City Public Works Department and water/wastewater operations and maintenance functions preferred.
  • Effective communication skills and basic records management methods.
  • Ability to operate various construction equipment and hand tools safely.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in reviewing, reading, analyzing, and interpreting equipment repair and maintenance manuals, blueprints, and technical drawings.
