About the position

The Water Specialist position is a critical role within the Water Division, responsible for the maintenance, installation, and repair of water systems. This position is available at three levels: Water Specialist I, II, and III, with salary ranges depending on experience. The Water Specialist I will read residential, commercial, and industrial water meters, perform routine maintenance, and assist with customer service and training. The Water Specialist II will take on more advanced responsibilities, including troubleshooting and emergency service work, while the Water Specialist III will lead teams, instruct other specialists, and manage complex projects related to the water system. Each level requires a commitment to safety, customer service, and teamwork, with opportunities for professional development and skill enhancement. The Water Specialist I classification recognizes the training and skill development needed in specialized water division functions as well as other public works divisions. Duties are performed with close direction until proficiency is demonstrated. The Water Specialist II will perform specialized and advanced water system maintenance, customer service, troubleshooting, and emergency service work. The Water Specialist III will perform difficult troubleshooting, maintenance, installation, and customer service tasks requiring extensive knowledge of the City's water system, public health, safety, equipment, and facilities. This role also involves scheduling and allocating work, attending construction meetings, and assisting with project planning. Essential job functions include monitoring customer water consumption, inspecting water lines and fixtures, maintaining water meters, and promoting water conservation practices. The position requires the ability to operate various tools and equipment, perform preventive maintenance checks, and respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner. The work environment is typically outdoors, requiring physical stamina and the ability to work in various weather conditions. Weekend and after-hours work may be required, especially in emergency situations.

Responsibilities

  • Read residential, commercial, and industrial water meters.
  • Perform routine maintenance, installation, and repair work of the Water Division.
  • Utilize tools and equipment to perform work on pump stations, wells, tanks, telemetry controls, and other water systems.
  • Provide customer service and training as needed.
  • Monitor unusual trends in customer water consumption and report irregularities.
  • Inspect water lines and fixtures to identify leaks and report findings.
  • Maintain, clean, repair, or replace water meters and associated equipment.
  • Promote water conservation practices and distribute public information.
  • Respond to public inquiries and resolve customer complaints in a positive manner.
  • Perform water sampling for bacteria, chlorine, and fluoride.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • One year of general work experience such as maintenance, construction, or building trades.
  • Must obtain and maintain certification as Washington State Water Distribution Specialist within one year of hire.
  • Valid State Driver's License and a good driving record.
  • Must pass a Criminal Background and Drivers Abstract check prior to hire.
  • Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) preferred at the time of hire or must obtain within six months of hire.
