About the position

The Water Treatment Operator is responsible for the skilled operation and maintenance of a water/wastewater treatment facility, ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations. This role involves performing daily operational checks, managing treatment processes, and conducting routine maintenance on equipment. The operator works under the supervision of a Lead Operator or Plant Supervisor and plays a crucial role in maintaining water quality and safety standards.

Responsibilities

  • Perform startup, shutdown, and daily operating checks of the treatment plant.
  • Operate and maintain specialized equipment including pumps, motors, and chlorinators.
  • Regulate the flow of wastewater and sludge through treatment processes.
  • Monitor storage tank levels and pump station indicators.
  • Inspect the plant and record data and problems in the daily log.
  • Perform routine preventative maintenance of plant equipment and grounds.
  • Load and unload chemicals used at the treatment plant.
  • Monitor flow, pressures, chemical feeds, levels, and water quality indicators.
  • Conduct field and laboratory tests to monitor and control facilities.
  • Maintain plant records such as operating logs and chemical feeds.
  • Backwash multimedia filters as needed.
  • Record operating data from laboratory analysis and flow metering equipment.
  • Acquire knowledge of the metric system for calibration purposes.
  • Conduct safety inspections and adhere to safety rules and procedures.
  • Communicate effectively with other operators and supervisors.
  • Answer calls from the call center and relay information to supervisors.
  • Call out employees in other departments as directed.
  • Attend operational and safety training programs as directed by management.
  • Interact with fellow employees and the public in a professional manner.
  • Drive vehicles and/or trucks as part of general responsibilities.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Basic knowledge of wastewater or water distribution principles and safety practices.
  • Basic understanding of mechanical, chemical, and biological processes related to water treatment.
  • One to two years of experience in the water/wastewater treatment field preferred.
  • Experience in servicing, maintaining, and repairing machinery and equipment preferred.
  • West Virginia OEHS class 2 Water Operator License preferred or ability to obtain within designated timeframe.

Nice-to-haves

  • College coursework in biology, chemistry, environmental science, or engineering preferred.
  • Wastewater experience is a plus.
