About the position

The primary purpose of the assistant Water/Wastewater Treatment Operator (WWTO) is to assist with the management, maintenance and operation of the water and wastewater treatment and distribution systems at the state recreation areas to ensure these systems are in compliance with all permits and regulations required by the NC State Board of Health, Division of Environmental Management, Division of Parks and Recreation, County Health Departments and other State and Federal regulatory agencies. This position functions as the Operator in Responsible Charge when the lead Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator (WWTO) is absent. This position interacts with other state and federal agencies. This position will also provide back-up support to other maintenance staff as determined by the lead WWTO, Maintenance/Construction Supervisor III, or Parks Superintendent IV. This position is responsible for keeping up with all the constant changes mandated by rules and regulations governing public water supplies and wastewater treatment plants that are not written directly into the permits. This position is responsible for all reports required by all federal and state agencies, Wake County, and the Local Emergency Planning Committee regarding Compliance of the Title III of the Superfund Amendments and Preauthorization Act (SARA) of 1986. The assistant WWTO is responsible for the collection of water samples from monitoring wells, effluent discharges, swimming areas, storage tanks, and potable water distribution lines. This position works closely with Falls Lake's lead WWTO on a day-to-day basis. Since much of the work is in public use areas, public contact is expected. The assistant WWTO must be professional in demeanor and take proper actions to ensure visitor safety and facilitate a quality recreational experience for all park patrons. This position assists the lead WWTO in coordinating the continuous maintenance program by prioritizing existing needs, effecting repairs, and writing a maintenance requests when necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the management, maintenance, and operation of the water and wastewater treatment and distribution systems at Falls Lake SRA.
  • Function as the ORC when the Water/Wastewater Supervisor is absent.
  • Assist with all water/wastewater system required parameter testing of samples to meet all federal, state, and local requirements.
  • Identify and coordinate maintenance needs with the water/wastewater supervisor, and effect repairs in conjunction with Falls Lake maintenance staff and outside contractors.
  • Assist with the supervision of water/wastewater seasonal employee staff.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the process involved in the treatment of raw water and/or wastewater.
  • Demonstrated experience in the operation of machines, equipment, and/or facilities in the collection of the treatment of, and distribution of water.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of plumbing, electrical, and/or mechanical skills applicable in the maintenance and operation of pumps, meters, timers and other fluid handling equipment.
  • Demonstrated experience in the use, care, and/or maintenance of laboratory equipment.
  • High school or General Educational Development (GED) Diploma and three (3) years of experience in wastewater treatment operations and maintenance, which includes making prescribed chemical and bacteriological analysis of water/wastewater; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Nice-to-haves

  • Must have or be able to obtain and maintain a valid NC driver's license within 90 days of employment.
  • Within 12 months of hire, must obtain and maintain CPR Certification.
  • Within 24 months of hire, must obtain and maintain Surface Irrigation Certification, C-Well Certification, Subsurface Wastewater Treatment Certification, S-212 Chainsaw Operations training.
  • Within 36 months of hire, must obtain and maintain Wild Land Fire Suppression Certification.
  • Must work a weekend and holiday on-call rotation.
  • Must be able to frequently lift up to 50 lbs with or without reasonable accommodation.
