About the position

The Watershed Ranger I position at the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) involves assisting in the management and protection of natural resources, public safety, and community education related to watershed conservation. The role includes proactive patrolling, emergency response, and the development of educational programs to enhance public understanding of conservation efforts.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the development and delivery of watershed, conservation, and stewardship interpretive programs.
  • Perform proactive patrol, surveillance, and intervention functions at varied hours and in varied weather conditions.
  • Assist in the development of displays, signs, literature, and multi-media presentations for public education.
  • Record and maintain data including education program records, patrol logs, and visitor surveys.
  • Supervise employees of lower grades and volunteers in their Ranger duties.
  • Perform search and rescue, first aid, and other emergency response functions.
  • Participate in training and development programs as directed.
  • Assist in the prevention, suppression, and control of forest fires.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of general ecology and cultural history study, practice, and principles.
  • Knowledge of methods and techniques for presenting media productions and drafting brochures.
  • Ability to understand, explain, and apply rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in oral expression and give clear instructions.
  • Ability to gather information through observation and interviews.
  • Ability to write concisely and express thoughts clearly.
  • Ability to make decisions and act quickly in emergency situations.
  • Ability to deal tactfully with others and adapt to varying work situations.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in park or resource management, environmental education, or natural/cultural history interpretation.
