About the position

At Motorola Solutions, we are dedicated to enhancing safety and security through innovative technology. The WAVE Network Engineer position is crucial in designing and implementing mission-critical IP networks for various government agencies. This role involves working closely with both pre-sale and post-sale design teams to establish strategies and directions for network architecture, specifically focusing on backhaul solutions for ASTRO 25 and WAVE VOIP technologies. The engineer will lead the technical design efforts, ensuring that the networks are secure, manageable, and meet the high standards required for public safety communications. The responsibilities include creating detailed network drawings, evaluating third-party vendor equipment, and collaborating with vendors and contractors to fulfill design requirements. The engineer will also be responsible for assessing network topologies and troubleshooting existing networks to ensure optimal performance. This position requires a strong understanding of effective network design methodologies and hands-on experience with troubleshooting live networks. The ideal candidate will possess certifications such as Juniper Network Certified Internet Associate (JNCIA) or Nokia Routing Specialist I (NRS I), along with experience in routing protocols like BGP, OSPF, and MPLS design and deployments. In addition to technical skills, the role demands excellent communication and interpersonal skills, as the engineer will work collaboratively with colleagues, customers, and third-party service professionals. The position is based in Washington D.C. and requires the ability to obtain necessary security clearances due to the sensitive nature of the work. The engineer will provide on-premises support, ensuring that the network solutions are effectively implemented and maintained in high-security environments governed by strict policies.

Responsibilities

  • Architectural network design of backhaul solutions for ASTRO 25 and WAVE VOIP technologies.
  • Consult with Pre-Sale and Post-Sale Design teams to set strategy, direction, and implementation.
  • Lead and define technical network architecture designs for ASTRO 25 backhaul networks.
  • Create and document detailed network drawings.
  • Evaluate third-party vendor equipment used in our portfolio.
  • Collaborate with third-party vendors/contractors to ensure delivery of design requirements.
  • Lead the engineering community in best practices for network designs.
  • Conduct network topology assessments and troubleshooting.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's (BS) Degree in Information Technology, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in IP Networking, Network Engineering, Solution Architecture, or related fields.
  • Good understanding of effective network design methodologies.
  • Experience with troubleshooting and assessing live networks.
  • Minimum preferred certifications: Juniper Network Certified Internet Associate (JNCIA), Nokia Routing Specialist I (NRS I) or equivalent.
  • Experience with routing protocols: BGP, OSPF, ISIS, and others as needed.
  • Experience with MPLS design and deployments.
  • Experience with LAN switching protocols: G8032 ring protection.
  • Experience with hardware from manufacturers such as Juniper, Nokia, HP, and Fortinet.
  • Knowledge of different media types: Metro Ethernet, Frame-Relay, Ethernet, SONET.
  • Knowledge of physical layer technologies such as Fiber, Copper, and Microwave.
  • Experience in scripting/programming is a plus.
  • Experience with Motorola ASTRO 25 architecture is a plus.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Visio, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Google Applications.
  • Experience with command line and/or GUI interfaces to provision equipment.
  • Experience with Network Management Applications such as Solarwinds, JUNO-Space, Nokia SAM/NFM-P, Provision.
