About the position

The Director of Engineering for Site Reliability Engineering at PayPal will play a pivotal role in shaping the strategy and vision for the company's next growth stage in the Tech Infrastructure space. This position is crucial for ensuring that PayPal maintains its industry-leading reliability, targeting an impressive 99.999% uptime. The successful candidate will collaborate with various stakeholders across the business, product, and technical domains to build and enhance the platform that supports PayPal's operations, which involve moving billions of dollars daily. The role requires a strong platform-first mindset and extensive experience in Infrastructure Engineering, Cloud, Reliability, and Site Engineering, particularly in high transaction volume environments such as the financial technology sector. In this role, the Director will lead the Site Reliability Organization, which is responsible for delivering a world-class, highly reliable experience for customers interacting with PayPal's products, including PayPal, Braintree, and Venmo. The selected candidate will have the opportunity to make a significant impact on scale, performance, and customer experience by leveraging emerging technologies like Cloud and AI/ML to build highly available and scalable platforms. The ideal candidate will be passionate about solving complex engineering problems and will have a proven track record of leading and mentoring teams to achieve their highest potential. The Director will be responsible for fostering a results-oriented culture focused on engineering excellence and execution. This includes recruiting, motivating, and mentoring top engineering talent, leading complex discussions across multiple project teams, and constructing a business and technical architecture that enhances operational efficiency. The role also involves managing geographically distributed teams, anticipating and removing obstacles to product delivery, and ensuring accountability among internal stakeholders. Strong communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills are essential for conveying important messages clearly and compellingly.

Responsibilities

  • Set the strategy and vision for the Tech Infrastructure space.
  • Collaborate with business, product, and technical stakeholders to enhance the platform's reliability.
  • Lead the Site Reliability Organization to ensure a highly reliable customer experience.
  • Drive a results-oriented culture focused on engineering excellence and execution.
  • Recruit, motivate, mentor, and lead engineering and management talent.
  • Lead complex discussions involving multiple project teams.
  • Build and scale platforms to support high transaction volumes.
  • Construct a business and technical architecture that leverages industry standards.
  • Provide strategic guidance and direction to development teams.
  • Manage geographically distributed teams and remove obstacles to product delivery.

Requirements

  • 15+ years of experience as an Engineering leader.
  • Experience in infrastructure engineering, site reliability, and DevOps practices.
  • Strong background in cloud technologies, preferably Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
  • Experience in the Payments, FinTech, and Financial Services industry.
  • Proven track record of achieving engineering and platform delivery targets.
  • Excellent time management skills with the ability to prioritize multiple work streams.
  • Strong communication skills with experience interfacing with executives.
  • Ability to lead and develop direct reports remotely.
  • AI experience is a significant plus.
