About the position

The Web Developer II position at Texas A&M University is a critical role within the Division of Marketing and Communications, focusing on website development and operations. The developer will be responsible for implementing website themes, enhancing functionality, fixing bugs, and improving overall performance and security of university websites. This role requires collaboration with cross-functional teams and support for web professionals across the university.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and enhance complex custom functionality for university websites by writing high-quality, secure, and accessible code.
  • Implement functionality and design components, automate processes, and improve efficiency for university websites.
  • Write code for WordPress, Cascade CMS, and future platforms using HTML, CSS, PHP, JavaScript, and Velocity script.
  • Develop, maintain, and support tools and automations to empower other web professionals and web CMS users.
  • Build integrations between web systems using APIs.
  • Test websites to find and fix issues, ensuring components function normally after modifications through testing.
  • Use software for version control, web accessibility, security and quality assurance testing, prototyping, and image editing.
  • Write documentation for code and tools.
  • Act as a liaison between designers and developers and between teams.
  • Participate in professional development to stay current on industry best practices.
  • Provide maintenance, administration, and support for web content management systems and web hosting platforms.
  • Collaborate with and support colleagues on the web team and others in marketing, information technology, faculty, staff, and vendors.
  • Train users and web staff in content management systems and other platforms that support university websites.
  • Promote best practices for web content, design, usability, accessibility, development, and related disciplines.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Information Systems, Computer Science, or closely related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Three years of experience in web development/programming, developing complex websites or web applications.
  • Strong understanding of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
  • Solid ability to program in a modern web development language.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in developing code for enterprise websites or web applications.
  • Knowledge of developing accessible websites following current Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG).
  • Understanding of security principles for web development, CMS administration, and web hosting.
  • Experience in WordPress theme and plugin development.
  • Knowledge of API-driven development and web integrations.
  • Familiarity with cloud platform configuration and administration (e.g., AWS, Google Cloud, Azure).
  • Experience with customer service and user support.
  • Knowledge of SEO (Search Engine Optimization).
  • Familiarity with relevant tools, software, and technologies, including version control systems, web quality assurance tools, and web accessibility tools.
