The Web Designer and Accessibility Developer at Elgin Community College (ECC) plays a crucial role in creating original designs that align with the college's brand across various digital platforms. This full-time position requires a mid-level professional who will collaborate closely with the Senior Designer/Developers to ensure consistency in digital advertising designs, website layouts, and homepage banners. A significant aspect of this role involves identifying and rectifying accessibility defects, as well as training faculty and staff on how to create accessible designs that comply with established standards such as the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG). In addition to design responsibilities, the Web Designer and Accessibility Developer will regularly assess digital experiences using assistive technology to ensure compliance with accessibility requirements. This position also involves managing user rights and permissions within the college's content management system, addressing issues reported by the college community, and troubleshooting bugs. The role is distinguished by the ability to provide expert consultation to stakeholders at all levels, ensuring that digital experiences are accessible and user-friendly for prospective students, faculty, and staff. The work schedule is Monday to Friday from 8 AM to 5 PM, with occasional evenings and weekends as needed. The position is exempt and not grant-funded, with a salary range starting at $64,236 and a midpoint of $85,648, commensurate with education and experience. Responsibilities

  • Create original designs for ECC's digital platforms, ensuring brand consistency.
  • Develop digital advertising designs for campaigns and website layouts.
  • Identify and fix accessibility defects in digital content.
  • Train faculty and staff on creating accessible designs and content.
  • Advise campus constituents on meeting accessibility standards and guidelines.
  • Regularly assess digital experiences using assistive technology for ADA compliance.
  • Manage user rights and permissions for the college's content management system.
  • Address issues reported by the college community through the website help desk.
  • Collaborate with designers to troubleshoot and document defects in digital content.
  • Conduct regular site maintenance and optimize website code for search engine ranking.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Art and Design, Computer Science, Information Technology, Web Development, or a related field, or equivalent experience in accessibility and digital documents.
  • 3-5 years of experience in manual accessibility testing across various platforms.
  • 1-2 years of web design experience with a solid online portfolio.
  • Considerable knowledge of accessibility-related guidelines and standards, including ADA, WCAG, and WAI-ARIA implementation.
  • Working knowledge of clean semantic HTML markup that meets WCAG Accessibility 2.0 AA standards.
  • Good knowledge of web coding languages and their relation to accessible experiences.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with a positive attitude.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills.
  • UX/UI experience is required.
