About the position

The Web Designer and Front-End Developer at Elon University is responsible for creating user-friendly and visually appealing websites that align with the university's brand standards. This role combines design and technology to enhance the university's online presence, focusing on layout, user-facing features, and optimizing web pages for efficiency. The position requires collaboration with various stakeholders to meet their web needs and involves maintaining and supporting existing web content.

Responsibilities

  • Engage with stakeholders to determine specific website needs.
  • Utilize design tools like Sketch, Adobe XD, or Figma to create website designs.
  • Develop static HTML, CSS, and JavaScript for web pages.
  • Build reusable code for WordPress templates and themes.
  • Ensure adherence to web standards and best practices for speed and scalability.
  • Maintain a well-organized file system for reusable code with regular backups.
  • Collaborate with the University Communications team to implement effective websites.
  • Translate content into engaging digital experiences using WordPress and the Gutenberg editor.
  • Provide website maintenance and technical support for university stakeholders.
  • Conduct web content accessibility testing and remediation against WCAG requirements.
  • Implement new technologies and features in partnership with the web team.
  • Design and develop email templates that adhere to brand standards.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Graphic Design, Communications, or Computer Information Systems.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in cross-platform web design and development.
  • Proficiency in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
  • Experience with WordPress, particularly the Gutenberg editor.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with advanced design tools such as Sketch, Adobe XD, or Figma.
  • Familiarity with web content accessibility testing tools like Dubbot, WAVE, and axe DevTools.
