About the position

The Penn State College of Medicine is seeking a Web Designer to join The Cheng/Ang Lab at Jake Gittlen Laboratories for Cancer Research. This role involves creating user-friendly and scientifically useful web-based resources, specifically focusing on updating and maintaining the Bio-atlas webpage. The successful candidate will collaborate with lab coordinators and the IT department to implement new features, ensure high performance, and maintain technical aspects of the website.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with lab coordinators and IT department to recode and update the Bio-atlas webpage.
  • Implement new features and functionality for the Bio-atlas.
  • Ensure high performance and availability of the Bio-atlas webpage.
  • Maintain all technical aspects of the Bio-atlas webpage.
  • Perform unit integration and testing, troubleshoot errors in new and legacy code.
  • Keep detailed records of workflows, software documentation, and experiments.
  • Assist in writing manuscripts and proposals.
  • Train new staff or students and collaborate with other research staff.
  • Communicate daily with PIs and co-workers.

Requirements

  • 2+ years of related experience in web design or development.
  • Associate's Degree or higher in a related field; Bachelor of Science Degree preferred.
  • Hands-on experience developing and maintaining scientific websites.
  • Proficiency in core web technologies including JavaScript (jQuery), CSS, Python, Django, SQL, Apache, OpenSeaDragon, and HTML/HTML5.
  • Experience with PHP and creating custom Drupal modules.
  • Solid understanding of databases and version control.
  • Ability to meet project goals and document solutions.
  • Basic Linux administration skills.
  • Familiarity with accessibility and assistive technologies.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of bioinformatics and genomic analysis.
  • Experience with genomic data from SNP chip genotyping, whole genome sequencing, and transcriptomics.
