About the position

The Web Designer position at the Houston Police Department involves designing and building web pages to support the department's strategies and goals. The role requires a combination of technical skills and creativity to develop user interface features, site animations, and special effects, ensuring the website is accurate, timely, and user-friendly.

Responsibilities

  • Conceptualizes, designs, and develops the layout and user interface of web pages, content, and applications.
  • Refreshes website content to ensure accuracy and timeliness of information.
  • Performs regular site updates and conducts periodic usability tests of web applications and links.
  • Monitors site for unauthorized information, such as commercial advertisements and outdated content.
  • Develops color schemes and designs graphics; authors HTML pages and translates materials to machine-readable format.
  • Consults with department management to determine site content and maintains knowledge of departmental developments.
  • Defines project scope and system requirements in conjunction with management and IT.
  • Coordinates activities with technical support staff to ensure continuous access to the department's website.
  • May provide web-related technical support and training to employees.
  • May lead and assign tasks to web production and clerical support staff.
  • Stays abreast of industry trends and applicable technologies, integrating new technology as needed.
  • Responds to requests and ideas from internal and external website users.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree in Graphic Arts Technology, Computer Information Technology, or a closely related field.
  • Three years of experience in developing, designing, and building web pages or a website for a large organization.
  • Two years of additional experience may substitute for the degree requirement.
  • A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Science, or a closely related field may substitute for the education requirement and two years of the experience requirement.
