About the position

The Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI) is a rapidly growing institute within the Dean of Research, dedicated to advancing AI research, education, policy, and practice to improve the human condition. HAI uniquely balances diverse expertise and integrates AI across human-centered systems and applications, leveraging the exceptional environment of Stanford University. The staff at HAI play a critical role in supporting the organization's goals and enabling Stanford faculty and students to conduct cutting-edge research aimed at formulating innovative solutions to global challenges. Together, we are helping to build the future of AI. We are currently seeking a full-time (100% FTE), benefits-eligible, fixed-term Web Designer 2 for a duration of two years, with the potential for extension or renewal based on additional funding commitments and programmatic needs. This position will be based on Stanford's main campus and may offer a hybrid work arrangement, subject to operational needs. The ideal candidate will oversee our website and create engaging, on-brand digital experiences to strengthen our digital presence and evolve our brand. The Web Designer will be an excellent listener and collaborative team member, capable of translating complex information into effective design deliverables that support our objectives. Reporting to the Managing Editor, the Web Designer will design, build, and implement a range of design deliverables, as well as update, maintain, and evolve both the HAI website and associated web properties. The role includes serving as the main point of contact for website update requests, managing or creating new websites, developing custom graphic packages for events, tracking website analytics, and creating branded document templates. The Web Designer will also lead as a subject matter expert in UX design best practices and will measure and report on website engagement.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the main point of contact to field and respond to website update requests and troubleshoot issues.
  • Manage or create new websites associated with HAI.
  • Develop custom, on-brand graphic packages for events and major announcements in collaboration with the Communications team.
  • Track, manage, and report on website analytics and make resulting recommendations.
  • Create branded document templates and apply content to existing design templates.
  • Assist in researching and procuring images for the HAI website and other digital properties.
  • Create superior user experiences through the design of elegant interfaces.
  • Collaborate with co-workers and stakeholders to synthesize requirements into sketches, wireframes, and design mockups.
  • Conduct formal and informal usability testing, and respond to results.
  • Build HTML and CSS components of web properties adhering to modern best practices.
  • Create design prototypes and collaborate with developers on components requiring more advanced scripting and programming.
  • Collaborate with IT Services, University Communications, and Online Accessibility Program staff to ensure compliance with policies and standards around identity graphics, web content, and online accessibility.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and three years of relevant experience or a combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong design and usability skills.
  • Advanced knowledge of modern design concepts and solutions and usability best practices for all web devices.
  • Proficiency in HTML and CSS.
  • Knowledge of user profiling, usability testing, and quality assurance practices.
  • Knowledge of web analytics tools and related analyses and reporting.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of different content management systems and ability to learn new ones.
  • Proficiency in graphic design software including Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and other visual design tools.
  • Good working knowledge of Google Analytics, tracking KPIs, and driving actionable goals and recommendations based on data.
  • Experience with digital marketing spanning email, social media, and other channels.
  • Experience creating charts, graphs, or illustrations for presentations, social media, and the web.
