About the position

The Weld Assembly Engineer is responsible for the development, follow-up, and launching of new welding equipment, assembly tools, and processes to produce high-quality prototype and production parts at required run rates. This role involves overseeing supplier shops, ensuring compliance with specifications, and coordinating with various departments to facilitate smooth equipment launches in Midway plants.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee supplier shops in the build of weld and assembly equipment.
  • Act as Midway's Manufacturing/Engineering representative to tool shops to ensure compliance with internal and customer specifications.
  • Coordinate and participate in Design Reviews (Concept, 50% & 100%).
  • Complete design review documentation and distribute to all team members.
  • Track timing weekly by obtaining timelines from tool shops.
  • Conduct periodic reviews at the tool shops to validate and assure on-time delivery of equipment.
  • Coordinate and participate in TSRO's at tool shops.
  • Ensure cell functionality and repeatability.
  • Monitor cycle time of the equipment as designed and defined in the process payback study.
  • Achieve 100% on-time delivery of all equipment.
  • Ensure weld quality, if applicable.
  • Achieve part dimensional requirements per customer specifications.
  • Assist in processing and delivery of prototype parts by ensuring assembly processes replicate production intent and meet specifications.
  • Launch assembly processes in Midway plants.
  • Serve as the overall lead and plant point of contact for assembly processes.
  • Coordinate with other Midway departments for timely equipment launches.
  • Work with Advanced Manufacturing, Industrial Engineering, and Controls Group to improve tooling, equipment, and processes.
  • Develop new tooling and equipment to operate at defined run rates.
  • Coordinate with Program Management on project objectives to meet customer requirements.
  • Participate in HLRO's at Midway's manufacturing plants.
  • Complete run-off documentation.
  • Reduce start-up, launch, and debug time and costs for new tooling, equipment, and process installations.
  • Review released parts/assembly prints for manufacturing feasibility and cost savings.
  • Prepare requests for quote packages (RFQ) for tooling design and building.
  • Implement purchase order requests and submit for approval.
  • Maintain familiarity with assembly developments and new materials in the industry.
  • Originate and apply new engineering methods.
  • Attend weekly APQP meetings and provide updates.
  • Perform other essential functions as assigned.

Requirements

  • Proficient in robotics and automation with the ability to manage multiple projects (required).
  • 3 years of experience in the automotive stamping industry (required).
  • Experience in joining processes such as staking, spin riveting, and gasket apply (required).
  • Bachelor's degree in a technical field preferred.
