About the position

Dominion Energy is seeking a Welder-Trainee to join our Construction & Maintenance Department, which is responsible for the construction, maintenance, and operation of the Company's natural gas distribution system. This position is ideal for individuals who are looking to start a career in the energy sector and are committed to safety and collaboration. The successful candidate will be required to demonstrate specified welding competencies within twelve months of acceptance of the position and will be subject to periodic competency testing. As a Welder-Trainee, you will perform stick welding on steel natural gas lines, including downhill welds using 6010 and 7010 welding rods and uphill welds using 7018 hot rods. Your responsibilities will also include various construction and maintenance activities, such as installing pressure control fittings, completing steel main tie-ins, and performing natural gas leak investigations and detection. You will be expected to set up common Department of Transportation approved worksites, calibrate instruments, and safely drive a company vehicle. Additionally, you will be responsible for completing a variety of paperwork in both written and electronic formats. This position requires availability for overtime and natural gas emergency response during the workday, evenings, and some weekends when on-call. Candidates must be willing to meet a 45-minute emergency response time from the geographical center of the Durham area. The role may involve occasional heavy lifting of up to 80 lbs independently. This position reports to the Company's South Durham Operations Center located in Durham, North Carolina, and offers opportunities for progression over time through three levels: Welder-Trainee, Welder B, and Welder A.

Responsibilities

  • Perform stick welding on steel natural gas lines, including downhill and uphill welds.
  • Conduct various construction and maintenance activities.
  • Install pressure control fittings and complete steel main tie-ins.
  • Install stations, farm taps, and meter sets.
  • Perform natural gas leak investigation and detection.
  • Set up common Department of Transportation approved worksites.
  • Pinpoint and grade leaks on the natural gas distribution system.
  • Calibrate instruments and use self-contained breathing apparatus when needed.
  • Complete paperwork in writing and electronic work queues.
  • Safely drive a company vehicle.

Requirements

  • 0 - 12 months construction/utility experience.
  • Experience with common hand and power tools.
  • Ability to calibrate instruments and use self-contained breathing apparatus and pipe squeeze-off equipment.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills for positive customer and contractor interactions.
  • Basic computer and internet navigation skills.
  • Ability to adhere to safe working and defensive driving procedures.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member within a diverse team.
  • Availability for overtime as needed.
  • Availability for natural gas emergency response during the workday, evenings, and weekends when on-call.
  • Must be willing and able to meet a 45-minute emergency response time from the geographical center of the Durham area.

Nice-to-haves
