About the position

The Art Teacher at West Seattle Elementary is responsible for fostering and enhancing an effective learning environment for students in grades K-6. This role involves developing and revising curriculum and instructional materials, establishing learning objectives based on district guidelines, and providing instruction tailored to meet the individual needs of students. The teacher will counsel, discipline, and supervise students, ensuring that they are supported in their educational journey. The position requires the teacher to instruct students in a self-contained classroom setting, maintaining daily attendance and adapting lessons to accommodate various learning styles and needs, including those of at-risk or special needs students. The Art Teacher will plan and implement an instructional program that meets the diverse needs of students, utilizing appropriate instructional methods and materials. This includes preparing lesson plans, attending in-service training, and engaging in professional development to stay current with instructional techniques. The teacher will also establish classroom policies and procedures to promote positive behavior and conduct, providing guidance and counseling to encourage student achievement. Regular communication with students, parents, and staff is essential to foster a supportive educational environment. In addition to teaching responsibilities, the Art Teacher will evaluate and record student progress, prepare reports for parents, and collect data for administrative purposes. The role may also involve directing the activities of non-certificated personnel and participating in staff meetings and committees to enhance professional skills and contribute to the school community. The working conditions require flexibility, the ability to handle multiple tasks, and the capacity to manage a diverse classroom environment effectively.

Responsibilities

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in education or a related field.
  • Valid Washington State Teaching Certificate.
  • Experience in teaching a culturally, racially, and economically diverse student population.
  • Knowledge of effective behavior management techniques and instructional strategies.
  • Proficiency in reading, writing, and oral communication skills.
