About the position

The Great Plains Regional Office of Ducks Unlimited, Inc. (DU) is seeking an accomplished and motivated Wetland Research Scientist to provide scientific support for its conservation efforts in the seven-state Great Plains Region. This position is based in Bismarck, North Dakota, and is a permanent role with a salary range of $65,000 to $85,000, commensurate with experience. The successful candidate will report directly to the regional Director of Conservation Science and Planning and is expected to start no later than January 1, 2025. The primary duties of the Wetland Research Scientist will include assisting with ongoing research projects across the Great Plains Region, providing scientific input on the impacts of land-use changes and conservation programs on wetland health and function, and developing grant proposals to secure funding for scientific efforts. The role also involves publishing and presenting research results in various forums, including peer-reviewed journals and professional meetings, as well as developing geospatial conservation planning tools. The scientist will conduct multidisciplinary research to support the development of conservation management approaches that consider socioeconomic, ecological, and biophysical interactions, thereby improving the understanding of biological, social, and economic processes related to wetlands and waterfowl. Additionally, the Wetland Research Scientist will assist with fundraising, volunteer, and donor education events in the Great Plains Region, contributing to the overall mission of Ducks Unlimited to conserve, restore, and manage wetlands and associated habitats for North America's waterfowl and other wildlife.

Responsibilities

  • Assisting with ongoing research projects across the Great Plains Region.
  • Providing scientific input regarding the impacts of land-use changes and conservation programs on the health and function of wetlands.
  • Developing grant proposals to fund science efforts.
  • Publishing and presenting research results in diverse forums including peer-reviewed journals and professional meetings.
  • Developing geospatial conservation planning tools.
  • Conducting and using multidisciplinary research to support development of conservation management approaches accounting for socioeconomic, ecological, and biophysical interactions.
  • Improving knowledge of fundamental biological, social, and economic processes and their interactions with wetlands and waterfowl.
  • Assisting with fundraising, volunteer, and donor education events in the Great Plains Region.

Requirements

  • M.S. degree in Wetland Ecology, Ecology, Limnology, Environmental Science, or a related field.
  • Three+ years of combined graduate education and research experience in wetland ecology, limnology, conservation planning, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with diverse audiences.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and productively with stakeholders and outside partners.
  • Excellent project management skills.
  • Proficiency with ArcPro and ArcOnline.
  • Proficiency with R, S-plus, Python, MATLAB, or SAS.
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity, inclusion, and diversity.
  • Agreeable to occasional flexible daytime hours and occasional day/overnight travel.
  • A background check and an alcohol/drug screening are required. Must have clean driving record, clean drug test, and a valid driver's license.
