About the position

The WIC Nutritionist is responsible for determining nutrition risk eligibility, prescribing and tailoring the WIC food package, and providing nutrition education for the county-wide WIC Program. This role acts as a resource for WIC staff and provides consultation as needed, ensuring that all duties are carried out in accordance with Federal, State, Agency, and WIC program policies and procedures. The position requires conducting complete nutrition assessments, determining nutrition risks, and enrolling participants into the program. In addition to prescribing and issuing food packages, the WIC Nutritionist reviews and approves formula requests that require medical documentation in consultation with healthcare providers. The role involves providing participant-centered nutrition education through individual or family sessions and group discussions, ensuring that the education is responsive to the identified needs and interests of participants. The nutritionist also documents appropriate follow-up referrals to other health and social services agencies, particularly for participants with additional nutrition or health concerns, and ensures that referrals for lead testing and immunizations are performed. The WIC Nutritionist tracks participant progress, documents outcomes, and identifies the need for individual care plans, referring to a Qualified Nutritionist as appropriate. They carry out high-risk care plans and provide counseling for high-risk participants, conduct breastfeeding assessments, and offer counseling to help mothers initiate and maintain breastfeeding. The role also includes assisting CPAs in planning and evaluating nutrition education sessions, developing and conducting nutrition training for staff, and mentoring new nutrition support staff. Other duties may be assigned as necessary within the scope of responsibility and skill required for the job.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts complete nutrition assessments and determines nutrition risk for participants.
  • Prescribes, tailors, authorizes, issues, and reissues food packages, including those requiring medical documentation.
  • Reviews and approves formula requests requiring medical documentation in consultation with healthcare providers.
  • Provides and documents participant-centered nutrition education through individual/family sessions or group discussions.
  • Documents appropriate follow-up referrals to health and social services agencies for participants with additional concerns.
  • Ensures referrals for lead testing and immunizations are performed.
  • Tracks participant progress and documents outcomes.
  • Identifies the need for individual care plans and refers to the Qualified Nutritionist as appropriate.
  • Carries out high-risk care plans established by the Qualified Nutritionist and provides counseling for high-risk participants.
  • Conducts breastfeeding assessments and provides counseling to support breastfeeding mothers.
  • Refers prenatal and postpartum clients to peer counselors and other breastfeeding support resources.
  • Assists CPAs in planning and evaluating participant-centered nutrition education sessions.
  • Develops, conducts, and evaluates nutrition training for staff in relevant topics.
  • Orients, trains, and mentors new nutrition support staff.
  • Conducts and oversees duties of a Nutrition Assistant to enhance program services.
  • Performs other duties as assigned within the scope of responsibility.

Requirements

  • Must be familiar with nutrition education and county health resources related to special populations.
  • Must have critical thinking skills and understand fiscal and nutritional risks involved with over-issuance of food packages.
  • Must possess skills to assess nutritional needs and risks beyond a standard food package and make appropriate adjustments.
  • Must be skilled in participant-centered nutrition counseling to produce behavioral change.
  • Must exhibit professionalism, good judgment, flexibility, courtesy, and integrity.
  • Must possess good communication skills and be able to follow oral and written directions.
  • Must maintain client confidentiality and relate to clients in a caring and sensitive manner.
  • Must be motivated and work collaboratively with others.
  • Must attend trainings, in-services, and seminars for skill maintenance and enhancement.
  • Required to obtain 24 hours of continuing education every three years in relevant topics.
  • Must possess a valid New York State Driver's License with a good driving record and access to a reliable vehicle for travel.
