About The Position

The Wildland Firefighter (Fuels) position is responsible for providing professional guidance in the development and implementation of resource management objectives related to fuels treatment and fire management. This role involves evaluating and coordinating fuels treatment strategies, preparing fire management plans, and overseeing prescribed fire activities. The position requires a combination of fieldwork and administrative responsibilities, ensuring compliance with laws and regulations while promoting effective fire management practices.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license.
  • Must pass a pre-employment physical and periodic medical exams for wildland fire personnel.
  • Must meet specified levels on annual physical fitness tests.
  • Must pass a urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment and is subject to random testing.
  • Experience in developing, reviewing, and evaluating fire management plans for ecological soundness and consistency with land management goals.
  • Experience in analyzing fuel loadings and determining appropriate fuel treatment methods.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in land use planning and environmental coordination to determine if resource objectives were achieved.
  • Knowledge of the ecological role of fire and its use and/or exclusion, and smoke management.

Responsibilities

  • Provide professional guidance in the development and implementation of multiple resource objectives.
  • Develop fuels treatment alternatives to support management decisions while adhering to applicable laws, regulations, policies, and guidelines.
  • Evaluate individual fuels treatments and the overall program effectiveness, making recommendations for improvement.
  • Coordinate with higher organizational levels, other agencies, cooperators, and stakeholders to develop interagency fuels strategies.
  • Provide input and recommend strategies for fuels and fire management.
  • Participate in the development, review, and modification of the fire management plan.
  • Prepare wildland fire risk assessments incorporating wildland/urban interface considerations into agreements and management plans.
  • Implement and administer prescribed fire activities, wildland fire use, and fuels management activities and surveys.
  • Monitor fire behavior, evaluate fire effects, identify potential problems, and take appropriate action.
  • Participate in preparedness reviews, proficiency checks, drills, safety sessions, and after-action reviews.
  • Prioritize prescribed fire and fuels management projects.
  • Serve as a Contracting Officer's Representative on fuels management contracts, preparing contract specifications and performance measures.
  • Assign work to lower graded staff based on priorities.
  • Perform administrative leadership responsibilities.
