About the position

The Wildland Firefighter (Fuels) position at the Bureau of Land Management in Dillon, MT, is responsible for planning, implementing, and coordinating all aspects of a fuels management program. This role involves providing technical assistance in program direction, budgeting, and prescribed fire programs, as well as conducting surveys and evaluations to develop treatment prescriptions for hazardous fuels management. The position requires both office and field work, with a focus on safety and preparedness during peak fire seasons.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in planning, implementing, and coordinating all aspects of a fuels management program.
  • Provide technical assistance in program direction, budgeting, fuels management, and prescribed fire programs.
  • Develop and recommend plans for prescribed fire, wildland fire, and fuels treatment projects.
  • Plan, conduct surveys, and evaluate data to develop treatment prescriptions.
  • Review project plans and make recommendations for monitoring activities.
  • Create, update, and use fire modeling software to assist in treatment recommendations.
  • Participate in the implementation of prescribed fire operations.
  • Conduct fuels management inventories and monitoring to document presence, amount, and types of hazardous fuels.
  • Participate in preparedness reviews, proficiency checks and drills, safety sessions, and after-action reviews.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license.
  • Must pass a pre-employment physical and work capacity test for arduous positions.
  • Must submit to a urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use and pass the test prior to appointment.
  • Background investigation required with a favorably adjudicated determination.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with fire modeling software.
  • Knowledge of hazardous fuels management techniques.
  • Familiarity with prescribed fire operations.
