About the position

The Wildland Firefighter - Hotshot position at Kings Canyon National Park involves working as part of a Hotshot Crew to manage wildfires and perform fire suppression and fuels management tasks. This role is entry-level for GS-03, with opportunities for advancement to GS-04 and GS-05 based on experience and training. Responsibilities include developing knowledge of fire suppression techniques, operating specialized tools, and responding to wildland fire incidents while ensuring safety and compliance with regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Develop a working knowledge of fire suppression and fuels management techniques.
  • Assist in specialized assignments such as backfire and burnout operations.
  • Carry out tree felling and other specialized firefighting tasks as a trained firefighter.
  • Gather and analyze information on weather data, topography, and fire behavior during incidents.
  • Operate light vehicles and 4X4s as required.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of appointment.
  • Must pass an initial pre-employment physical examination and work capacity fitness test.
  • Must pass a mandatory pre-employment drug test and be subject to random drug testing during employment.
  • Must have a valid state driver's license; some positions may require a CDL.
  • Must meet medical qualification requirements.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in wildland fire suppression or related fields.
  • Education in Wildland Fire Science or related areas.
