About the position

The Wildlife Biologist (Staff) position at the US Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service involves planning, developing, and managing complex wildlife damage management projects. The role requires ensuring compliance with environmental regulations and providing biological guidance to mitigate wildlife damage. This position is remote but has geographic restrictions, requiring candidates to reside in specific time zones to facilitate coordination with Guam.

Responsibilities

  • Independently plans, develops, and manages multiple complex administrative or mission-related projects statewide, regionally, or nationally.
  • Responsible for development, monitoring, editing, maintenance, and renewal of the work unit's NEPA documents.
  • Monitors and ensures compliance with annual NEPA take thresholds and relevant regulations.
  • Compiles and evaluates data on damage or hazards caused by wildlife species for NEPA and ESA documents.
  • Supports national NEPA efforts through information provision and review.
  • Ensures compliance of work unit activities with NEPA, ESA, MBTA, and other Federal laws.
  • Coordinates with Federal and State agencies regarding NEPA, ESA, and MBTA consultations.
  • Develops and maintains required Administrative and Project Records for NEPA, ESA, and MBTA processes.
  • Works with the supervisor to provide biological guidance to reduce wildlife damage effectively.
  • Recommends areas for potential research or developmental study.

Requirements

  • Must be a US Citizen or US National.
  • Valid state driver's license required.
  • Master's degree in biological science with specific coursework in wildlife subjects, zoology, and botany, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience with Wildlife Damage Management (WDM) techniques and regulations such as NEPA, ESA, and MBTA.
  • Experience using GPS, GIS technologies, and web-based systems for data collection and analysis.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in supervising or project planning of a WDM program.
  • Experience writing or supporting NEPA documents such as Environmental Assessments.
  • Technical advice experience to cooperators in various settings.
