About the position

The Wildlife Technician position at the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency involves performing wildlife conservation work under general supervision. This entry-level role includes responsibilities in various specialty areas such as fish management, forestry management, and wildlife area maintenance. The technician will assist in studies, collect biological data, and engage in habitat management activities to support wildlife populations and their environments.

Responsibilities

  • Communicate with external stakeholders, representing the organization to customers and the public.
  • Assist Wildlife Biologists/Managers with studies of fish populations and collect data through electro-fishing methods.
  • Conduct interviews with fishermen to gather data on fish species harvest and fishing pressure.
  • Construct and place fish attractors in reservoirs to enhance fishing sites.
  • Transport fish for stocking and monitor fry growth in ponds.
  • Construct access routes and forest roads, and conduct seasonal forestry activities.
  • Inspect trees and collect samples to identify insect and disease damage.
  • Provide forestry education and technical support to community organizations and the public.
  • Assist in constructing and maintaining agency buildings, roads, and trails.
  • Collect biological data from game during managed hunts and assist in wildlife population studies.

Requirements

  • Experience equivalent to one year of full-time wildlife conservation, forestry, farming, or closely related work.
  • Possess a valid motor vehicle operator's license at the time of appointment.
  • Ability to acquire a valid commercial driver's license/endorsement upon appointment.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of wildlife and fisheries habitat management or a related field.
  • Basic computer knowledge for administrative duties.
  • Basic knowledge of hunting, fishing, and trapping regulations.
