About the position

The Wildlife Technician position at the Cowlitz Indian Tribe involves assisting with wildlife program efforts, particularly focusing on the Beaver Relocation Project. The role includes maintaining a beaver holding facility, conducting field assessments, and providing operational support for habitat restoration and lands maintenance. The technician will work closely with the Wildlife Program Manager to ensure the humane care of animals and contribute to the Tribe's natural resource management goals.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the capture, holding, transport, and release of beavers as part of the Beaver Relocation Project.
  • Contribute to the operation of the beaver holding facility, including cleaning, feeding, and maintaining animal care routines.
  • Aid in identifying potential beaver release sites and monitoring the effectiveness of past releases.
  • Prepare field notes and reports on Wildlife Program activities.
  • Assist with habitat restoration projects, including planting and maintaining vegetation.
  • Construct and repair signage and fencing using various tools and equipment.
  • Operate and maintain tools and equipment, ensuring safe working conditions.
  • Gather resource inventory information on focal species.
  • Assist in coordinating community education and cultural awareness projects.
  • Maintain professional knowledge through research and participation in workshops.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree in biology, zoology, fisheries, wildlife, chemistry, natural sciences, or a closely related field.
  • Three years of related experience in natural resources or a related field.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a beaver relocation permit.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Washington State Boater Education Card.
  • Valid driver's license is required.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in Tribal law & regulations.
  • Knowledge of traditional forms of government and tribal customs.
  • Familiarity with federal, state, and tribal environmental programs.
