About the position

Westwood Professional Services, Inc. is seeking a Wind Collection Electrical Engineer to join our renewables team. The Electrical Engineer - Wind Collection serves as an engineer on the Balance of Plant (BOP) for on-shore wind farms. This role involves applying NESC, NEC, IEEE, and other applicable codes and standards to independently produce electrical collection system layout plans, one-line diagrams, fiber optic single line diagrams, and low and medium voltage electrical construction drawings for typical components including switchgear, generator step-up transformers, junction boxes, direct buried cable, duct banks, and splices. The engineer should be familiar with all aspects of three-phase medium voltage power distribution engineering and be capable of performing typical power systems studies. Additionally, the engineer will lead a design team that may consist of more junior engineers, electrical designers, and CAD designers, while also collaborating with other internal and external project stakeholders to ensure project milestones and expectations of contracted services are met. The position requires performing all aspects of design for medium voltage (typically 35 kV), including calculations and analysis such as underground cable thermal analysis, electrical loss analysis of conductors and transformers, short circuit analysis, effective grounding calculations, fiber optic loss calculations, load flow and reactive power analysis, harmonics analysis, and arc flash analysis. The engineer will also be responsible for developing technical documentation, including technical specifications for Balance of Plant equipment, bills of materials for electrical installations, installation instructions, and construction drawing details. Coordination with other disciplines is essential, as the engineer must work closely with internal and external civil engineering, structural, geotechnical, and environmental staff to produce a well-coordinated and constructable design. The ideal candidate will be keenly focused on producing high-quality work and supporting continuous improvement and standardization efforts. They should enjoy working in a fast-paced environment on multiple projects and be responsible for assisting with the identification of key client interests and drivers. This includes communicating client interests to project team members and developing approaches to accommodate these concerns in the performance of the work, as well as attending all client technical review meetings.

Responsibilities

  • Perform all aspects of design for medium voltage (typically 35 kV) including calculations and analysis.
  • Conduct underground cable thermal analysis and electrical loss analysis of conductors and transformers.
  • Perform short circuit analysis and effective grounding calculations for safety.
  • Conduct fiber optic loss calculations, load flow and reactive power analysis, harmonics analysis, and arc flash analysis.
  • Develop technical specifications for Balance of Plant equipment and bills of materials for electrical installations.
  • Create installation instructions and construction drawing details.
  • Coordinate with internal and external civil engineering, structural, geotechnical, and environmental staff to produce a well-coordinated design.
  • Assist in identifying key client interests and drivers, and communicate these to project team members.
  • Attend client technical review meetings.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 4 years related work experience in medium voltage collection system design for renewable energy systems or underground medium voltage power distribution.
  • Basic proficiency in the use of AutoCAD.
  • Strong proficiency in Cymcap software for underground thermal analysis of electrical conductors.
  • Strong proficiency in an electrical power system analysis tool such as Digsilent Power Factory, ETAP, or similar for performing short circuit, load flow, harmonics, and arc flash analysis.
  • Basic familiarity with software for performing electric grounding analysis for safety (touch and step potential) such as WinIGS or CDEGS.
  • Strong familiarity with the NEC and National Electrical Safety Code.
  • Good knowledge of industry and technology trends specific to wind turbine generators and wind collection design.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary range of $80,000-130,000 annually.
  • Opportunities for professional development and growth within the company.
  • A collaborative work environment that values relationships and innovation.
