About the position

The Wine Director/Assistant General Manager at FLAG Solutions is a pivotal role responsible for leading the restaurant's wine program and overseeing the front-of-house (FOH) team. This position combines wine expertise with managerial duties, ensuring a high-quality guest experience while managing wine inventory, costs, and staff training. Responsibilities

  • Oversee the FOH team
  • Create a friendly and unpretentious atmosphere for guests around wine
  • Deliver a strong floor presence with a focus on wine sales and service
  • Oversee the flow of the business and remain present in all areas of the restaurant during service
  • Complete weekly wine inventory and place orders
  • Ensure the team is well educated on the menu items and wine offerings
  • Hire, train, motivate and coach team members
  • Provide support for other management staff in a positive manner
  • Order wine, manage inventory, and schedule staff
  • Perform all aspects of the job with a high level of professionalism and integrity
  • Establish a positive work culture that aligns with company values
  • Contribute to controlling costs and maximizing efficiencies
  • Take initiative to build business and maintain the wine program
  • Hold the team accountable to high standards while remaining hands-on
  • Assess employee performance and provide feedback and training opportunities
  • Maintain health, safety, and sanitation standards
  • Understand and comply with CA labor laws

Requirements

  • Minimum 2-4 years' experience as a Wine Manager, Wine Director, Sommelier, Restaurant Assistant General Manager, Restaurant Manager, Food & Beverage Manager, Dining Room Manager, FOH Manager, or Hospitality Manager in a full-service, upscale, fine-dining restaurant
  • Extensive wine knowledge including characteristics, wineries, regions, varietals, food pairings, and service
  • Level one or Level two Court of Master Sommeliers or equivalent certification highly preferred
  • Experience managing a large wine inventory
  • Passion for educating the team and guests on beverage offerings, pairings, and tasting notes
  • Ability to achieve or exceed wine cost expectations while maintaining quality
  • Commitment to creating a welcoming and memorable guest experience
  • Basic understanding of administrative functions and controlling cost of goods
  • High attention to detail
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Strong sense of integrity and initiative
  • Strong interpersonal, leadership, coaching, and conflict resolution skills
  • Ability to prioritize and manage time effectively
  • Ability to analyze processes and information, identify problems and trends, and develop effective solutions
  • Exceptional standards for cleanliness, health, and safety
  • Computer proficiency, including the use of Microsoft Office
  • Flexible schedule, including weekends and holidays as needed
  • Food safety certification
