About the position

The Leidos Research Support Team is seeking a Wireless Network Engineer to support the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) in Pittsburgh, PA. This position offers a unique opportunity to engage in impactful research alongside world-class scientists and engineers, utilizing state-of-the-art equipment to contribute to both basic and applied research. The successful candidate will be part of an interdisciplinary team that collaborates with industry, academic, and national laboratory partners to develop a wireless sensor network aimed at infrastructure sensing. The role encompasses the entire development cycle, from conceptualization to field demonstration, providing a comprehensive experience in the field of wireless networking and sensor technology. Candidates should possess a strong background in passive microwave sensor devices and networking methodologies. The role requires demonstrated skills in automation and testing using advanced RF/microwave techniques, as well as hands-on experience with RF and microwave propagation systems. The ideal candidate will leverage analytical models, finite element modeling, and other simulation tools for device modeling, sensor network development, and instrumentation automation. Expected outcomes of the research include publications in high-quality scientific peer-reviewed journals, presentations at national and international technical meetings, and the development of new intellectual property. This position is designed for individuals who are eager to make a significant impact in the field of wireless sensor networks and are prepared to collaborate with a multidisciplinary group of researchers to achieve project goals. The role also involves creating and delivering presentations of research results at technical conferences and effectively documenting scientific findings through peer-reviewed journal manuscripts and technical reports.

Responsibilities

  • Design, simulate, and optimize Surface Acoustic Wave devices based on sensing stimuli of interest.
  • Work with functional material scientists to design and develop devices capable of detecting pipeline environmental factors.
  • Model and analyze radio wave propagation in complex environments.
  • Use RF and microwave systems to measure changes in infrastructure conditions wirelessly at desired locations.
  • Develop automated methods for analyzing data from sensor networks or arrays to monitor multiple real-time conditions at multiple desired locations.
  • Plan and participate in field test demonstrations of developed technologies.
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary group of science researchers to accomplish project tasks.
  • Create and deliver oral and poster presentations of results in meetings and at technical conferences/workshops.
  • Effectively document and communicate scientific results through peer-review journal manuscripts and technical reports.

Requirements

  • Masters' degree in electrical engineering, engineering physics, or other related field with 2+ years of related experience or PhD in electrical engineering, engineering physics, or other related field with related experience.
  • Experience with device fabrication and testing (ideally in harsh environments).
  • Experience leveraging analytical models, finite element analysis, and other simulation tools for device modeling, sensor network development, and instrumentation automation.
  • Hands-on familiarity with laboratory equipment such as vector network analyzers, arbitrary waveform generators, oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, data acquisition and processing systems using Python, LabVIEW, MATLAB, or other programming languages.
  • Must be able to meet the requirements for gaining access to work on the NETL campus.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in academic research environments with a first author publication record.
  • Experience in research, implementation, and evaluation of active and passive RF/microwave communication networks.
  • Experience using Software Defined Radios.
  • Experience with COMSOL or Ansys HFSS.
