About the position

The Wireless Systems Application Engineer at Apple is a pivotal role within the Wireless Silicon Design group, focusing on the development of innovative wireless communication systems for next-generation applications. This position involves designing and simulating state-of-the-art wireless systems, collaborating with cross-functional teams to create robust architectures and protocols, and conducting extensive validations to ensure optimal performance in congested environments. The engineer will work on enhancing user experiences through advanced algorithm designs and system optimizations, contributing to the evolution of wireless technologies that impact millions of users.

Responsibilities

  • Design and simulate advanced wireless communication systems for next-generation applications.
  • Implement system models and investigate innovative architectures, protocols, and algorithms in PHY/MAC cross-layer to mitigate the impact of congested radio environments.
  • Collaborate with product teams to develop novel architectures, protocols, integrated systems, and algorithms to meet emerging application requirements.
  • Perform simulations to validate the efficiency of crafted architectures, protocols, and algorithms on emulation systems.
  • Work with firmware designers to implement high-efficiency software solutions for developed methods.
  • Collaborate with digital designers to realize power and area-efficient digital implementations of the methods.
  • Bring up, test, and characterize algorithms, optimizing performance to meet production quality standards on real silicon.

Requirements

  • BS degree in a relevant field and a minimum of 10 years of industry experience.
  • Extensive experience in developing wireless communication systems, including algorithm design, system architecture, and protocol integration.
  • In-depth knowledge of wireless communication systems (e.g., OFDM/MIMO) with hands-on lab testing and characterization experience.
  • Deep understanding of communication theory and signal processing algorithms (e.g., timing recovery, signal estimation, automatic gain control).
  • Experience with multi-radio coexistence management and system optimization in congested radio environments through cross-layer designs.
  • Proficiency in Matlab, Python, and/or C/C++ for algorithm development, modeling, and simulation.
  • Knowledge of existing wireless protocols (e.g., 5G, LTE, Wi-Fi standards, Bluetooth).

Nice-to-haves

  • Some experience in modem architecture and microprocessor architecture.
  • Experience with firmware design and software controls.
  • Relevant experience in low-power algorithm design for power-critical applications.
  • Knowledge of High-Level Synthesis (HLS), silicon prototyping, emulation systems, and virtual platforms.
  • Prior experience in bringing up real silicon in lab settings and using lab equipment (e.g., spectrum analyzer, signal generator).
