About the position

The Wood Worker (Blocker & Bracer) position at the Department of Defense involves performing essential duties related to securing items for shipment. This role requires the construction and repair of containers, as well as the operation of various powered equipment to ensure materials are safely packed and transported. The position is full-time and based in Mechanicsburg, PA, with occasional travel required.

Responsibilities

• Perform blocking and bracing duties to secure items for shipment.
• Pre-block a variety of rail cars, trucks/trailers, and heavy equipment transporters prior to loading cargo.
• Construct and repair boxes, crates, and skids, and pack materials according to specifications.
• Cut blocks, wedges, and parts for wood bracing.
• Build temporary decking, bulkheads, and cribbing around items.
• Clamp, strap, or tie down loaded material.
• Operate powered equipment such as saws, drills, and pneumatic nailing guns.
• Operate forklifts capable of lifting loads up to 10,000 pounds.

Requirements

• Must be a U.S. citizen.
• Ability to perform the work of a Wood Worker (Blocker & Bracer) without more than normal supervision.
• Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, repair, and materials.
• Ability to interpret instructions and specifications, including blueprint reading.
• Skill in measurement and layout.
• Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment.
