About the position

Idaho National Laboratory is seeking a WordPress Developer Support Engineer to join our Information Technology department for a two-year project hire. This position is based in our Idaho Falls, Idaho facility, where our team operates on a 9x80 schedule, allowing for every other Friday off. We offer flexible work arrangements, including remote or hybrid options, to accommodate our employees' needs. In this role, you will report directly to the Manager of Application Delivery Services. Your primary responsibilities will include maintaining and securing the WordPress environment and applications, as well as migrating existing SharePoint sites to our WordPress platform. You will be tasked with administering INL's WordPress environment, ensuring it meets the organization's standards and requirements. Your work will involve collaborating with customers to develop creative solutions tailored to their needs. You will leverage your knowledge of industry standards and best practices in WordPress hosting to suggest and implement well-designed solutions that align with customer goals. Additionally, you will identify organizational needs and work closely with your lead to present these needs to customers, taking ownership of assigned tasks and ensuring their completion. Frequent communication with customers will be essential to keep them informed of progress and ensure alignment with their expectations. You will apply software engineering principles to enhance processes and improve information display and visualization. Your responsibilities will also include planning, developing, and implementing software-engineering solutions for complex problems and major projects, supporting project plans and requirements, and establishing scope, cost, and schedule estimates for development activities. As part of your role, you will participate in technical reviews at various project phases, providing recommendations for technology solutions that meet customer and management needs. You will maintain and upgrade existing systems while developing new software capabilities. Documenting your activities, creating reports, and reviewing source code and system design documentation will also be part of your responsibilities. Engaging in professional development to stay current with emerging technologies is encouraged, as is utilizing your expertise to define strategic directions in your assigned areas.

Responsibilities

  • Work with customers to develop creative solutions to their needs.
  • Migrate existing SharePoint sites to WordPress.
  • Utilize knowledge of industry standards and solutions surrounding WordPress hosting to suggest and implement creative solutions.
  • Identify organizational needs and present them to customers.
  • Take ownership of assigned tasks and follow them through to completion, including validation with testing organizations and customers.
  • Communicate progress frequently with customers to ensure alignment with their direction.
  • Apply software engineering principles to processes and information display and visualization.
  • Plan, develop, and implement software-engineering solutions to complex problems and major projects.
  • Support project plans and requirements, establishing scope, cost, and schedule estimates for development activities.
  • Participate in technical reviews for projects at multiple phases of development and provide recommendations for technology solutions.
  • Maintain and upgrade a variety of systems and develop new software capabilities.
  • Create new methodologies and architectures that advance the organization's mission.
  • Document activities, reports, and existing technologies.
  • Review source code and system design documentation, and create reports to assess code quality and recommend improvements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree plus 2-5 years of experience, or an advanced degree with 1-3 years of relevant experience, or 10+ years of relevant education/experience in lieu of a bachelor's degree.
  • Experience developing, deploying, and maintaining WordPress applications.
  • Experience with SQL or MySQL.
  • Experience with version control systems.
  • Experience supporting WordPress.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience deploying applications through an Azure DevOps Pipeline.
  • Experience with containerization technologies.
  • Experience developing custom WordPress components.
