About the position

Our client is seeking a short-term WordPress Developer to assist with development upgrades to their WordPress multi-site, plugins, external API integrations, and other customized projects. The systems in place connect with on-campus software, specifically an Oracle-based course management system, and serve thousands of professionals from the initial registration on the website to the final receipt of a customized certificate. This role will involve collaboration with internal teams and campus partners, focusing on WordPress, Google Analytics (both Universal and G4), and proficiency with LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP) platforms, as well as web hosting management tools and protocols such as Plesk, GIT, and SFTP. The WordPress Developer will be responsible for designing, developing, testing, debugging, and troubleshooting software and applications. This includes conducting system analysis and design, providing technical leadership, training, and guidance to lower-level staff to support information technology business operations. The developer will review application design specifications, code new applications, and enhance existing applications. They will also design and implement test plans, prepare systems test data, and develop or modify technical specifications for complex projects, system integrations, and upgrades. In addition, the developer will conduct systems analysis, review and interpret system requirements, and develop detailed system design specifications for system integrations and upgrades. They will review application modules for quality assurance and ensure compliance with application architecture standards. The role also involves conducting analysis for the evaluation and selection of vendor software solutions and packages, contributing to the development of data structure and systems performance strategies, and managing WordPress sites for both internal and external teams, including regular maintenance, upgrades, and feature enhancements. Effective communication, both verbally and in writing, is essential for this position.

Responsibilities

  • Designs, develops, tests, debugs, and troubleshoots software and applications.
  • Conducts system analysis and design, providing technical leadership, training, and guidance to lower-level staff.
  • Reviews application design specifications, codes new applications, and enhances existing applications.
  • Designs and implements test plans, and prepares systems test data.
  • Develops, prepares, or modifies technical specifications for complex projects, system integrations, and upgrades.
  • Conducts systems analysis, reviews and interprets system requirements, and develops detailed system design specifications for system integrations and upgrades.
  • Reviews application modules for quality assurance and checks compliance with application architecture standards.
  • Conducts analysis for the evaluation and selection of vendor software solutions and packages.
  • Contributes to the development of data structure and systems performance strategies.
  • Develops documentation for sustainability of the code base.
  • Manages WordPress sites for both internal and external teams, including regular maintenance, upgrades, and feature enhancements.
  • Engages with campus Web Hosting team regarding WordPress website development and hosting.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of demonstrated experience with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and PHP.
  • 3+ years of in-depth knowledge and experience with WordPress and the technologies and platforms that support it (e.g., themes, plugins, Gutenberg editor, APIs, MySQL, LAMP, etc.).
  • 3+ years of experience working with Web Hosting Control Panels (Plesk/cPanel), GIT (version control systems), Secure FTP, etc.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience administering and troubleshooting WordPress sites and/or Multisite installations.
  • Experience with React JavaScript framework (or similar framework/library).
  • Knowledge of best practices and use of vendor plugins for WordPress.
  • Understanding or knowledge of AWS.
  • Knowledge of or other similar front-end development frameworks (Bootstrap, Tailwind CSS, Semantic UI, etc.).
  • Ability to manage projects from start to finish, including scoping, planning, and execution.
  • Experience with AWS cloud tools such as Route53 and CloudWatch.
  • Basic understanding of digital marketing tools and concepts such as SEO, web analytics, and how they apply to websites.
