About the position

The Workers' Compensation Claims Examiner position at the Department of Labor involves serving as a Special Hearing Representative and preliminary authority in managing and adjudicating complex and sensitive claims. The role requires authorizing payments for a wide range of highly complex disability and death cases, as well as issuing decisions for cases involving classified information. This position is located in Washington, DC, and is not part of the bargaining unit.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct detailed reviews of assigned claim records for appeals of adverse decisions by Federal Employees' Compensation claimants.
  • Perform necessary research and investigation to ensure claims management complies with the Federal Employees' Compensation Act (FECA) and its governing regulations.
  • Serve as the Agency's independent authority in reviewing claims and rendering appellate level decisions in classified claims.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for Federal agencies on workers' compensation claims containing classified information.
  • Maintain and handle classified national security information according to government-wide and Department of Labor standards.
  • Prepare reports and provide data advising management of new trends in the hearing program.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 16 years old.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Candidates required to obtain the necessary security/investigation level.
  • Requires a probationary period if the requirement has not been met.
  • Subject to pre-employment and random drug tests.
  • 52 weeks of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-12).
  • Experience in drafting and/or signing final decisions or briefs to claimants for compensation benefits.
  • Experience in reviewing case documents and/or evidence to evaluate workers' compensation claims.
  • Experience in analyzing and interpreting legal issues to determine entitlement to workers' compensation benefits under federal laws.
