About the position

The Workers' Compensation Coordinator at UChicago Medicine is responsible for managing the workers' compensation program, overseeing the entire process from the initial investigation of injuries to the closure of claims. This role involves analyzing claim data to identify trends and areas for improvement, ensuring accurate payment of benefits, and providing case management services for injured employees. The position also includes coordinating transitional work assignments and managing relationships with third-party administrators and legal counsel.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the workers' compensation program from initial injury investigation to claim closure.
  • Review claim data to identify trends and areas for improvement.
  • Ensure correct payment of disability benefits to injured employees.
  • Approve wire transfer requests for program expenses.
  • Provide case management services for injured employees.
  • Manage the modified Duty Program for transitional work assignments.
  • Authorize settlements within budget for litigated claims.
  • Compose reports and correspondence for communication among stakeholders.
  • Run monthly reports for department work injury data.
  • Coordinate the transitional duty program with department managers.
  • Review and report occupational injury/illness information to appropriate agencies.
  • Establish workers' compensation claims with third-party administrators.
  • Consult with healthcare providers on treatment plans and return-to-work status.
  • Review and ensure prompt payment of temporary total disability benefits.
  • Monitor service level agreements with WC TPA and vendors.
  • Approve weekly funding requests for services.
  • Participate in leadership development and safety committees.
  • Refer employees to Sedgwick for leave administration when claims are denied.
  • Audit medical charges for appropriate billing related to workers' compensation.
  • Coordinate quarterly claim reviews with WC TPA and outside counsel.
  • Grant settlement authority per finance policy.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in nursing, Allied Health, or related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in Workers' Compensation Administration or a similar role.
  • Current knowledge of laws and regulations governing worker health and safety (OSHA, Illinois Workers' Compensation Act, ADA, FMLA).
  • Knowledge of computer software and databases (e.g., Kronos, Oracle, EMRs).
  • Ability to analyze complex medical information.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
