About the position

The Workers' Compensation Manager will oversee the management of workers' compensation claims for the County of San Mateo. This role involves collaboration with various stakeholders, including employees, managers, healthcare providers, and legal teams, to ensure fair and timely handling of claims. The manager will also be responsible for policy development, training, and reporting related to workers' compensation and disability claims.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with County employees, managers, healthcare providers, and third-party claims administrators to manage workers' compensation claims.
  • Research, investigate, and analyze workers' compensation and disability claims.
  • Review and develop policies and procedures related to workers' compensation.
  • Prepare statistical and narrative reports, case summaries, and training manuals.
  • Serve as a liaison for employees and managers regarding workers' compensation matters.
  • Conduct interviews with injured employees and other relevant parties to gather information.
  • Assess the compensability of injuries and manage the issuance of benefits according to the Labor Code.
  • Engage in the placement and monitoring of injured employees in modified work assignments.
  • Assist with research and reports regarding serious claims and fraud investigations.
  • Provide training for managers on workers' compensation procedures and guidelines.
  • Attend Workers' Compensation Appeal Board hearings and represent the County in various meetings and committees.

Requirements

  • At least two years of experience managing workers' compensation claims (five years preferred).
  • Knowledge of California Workers' Compensation laws and ADA regulations.
  • Familiarity with medical terminology and treatment protocols for industrial injuries.
  • Understanding of principles of ergonomics and related issues.
  • Ability to analyze statistical data and apply it to safety and risk management.
  • Experience with investigative techniques related to claims management.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in budgeting and accounting related to workers' compensation programs.
  • Familiarity with enterprise software for claims management.
