About the position

The Sonoma Ecology Center (SEC) is seeking a Writer/Content Creator to enhance its communication efforts and support its mission of promoting ecological health in Sonoma Valley and beyond. This role is pivotal in ensuring that the organization effectively communicates its initiatives, engages with the community, and maintains a strong brand presence. The Writer/Content Creator will be responsible for producing all written and multimedia content, which includes crafting messages that resonate with diverse audiences and stakeholders. The ideal candidate will thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment and will be comfortable working both independently and collaboratively within a small team. This position reports to the Associate Director and collaborates closely with the Executive Director and Program Managers across the organization. The Writer/Content Creator will engage in various tasks, including general communications, content creation, and social media management. They will work with the Event and Communications Specialist to uphold the integrity of SEC's voice and brand, ensuring that all communications are accurate and culturally sensitive. The candidate will also contribute to corporate and partner engagement efforts, developing content for annual reports and seasonal appeals. In terms of content creation, the Writer/Content Creator will lead social media campaigns, produce engaging video content, and analyze social media engagement to inform future strategies. The role requires a reliable means of transportation to visit various SEC-managed locations and event venues, ensuring that the candidate can effectively fulfill their responsibilities.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement written and multimedia content for SEC's communications.
  • Collaborate with the Event and Communications Specialist to maintain the integrity of SEC's voice and brand.
  • Ensure accurate and consistent messaging to all external audiences.
  • Contribute to corporate and partner engagement content development, including annual reports and seasonal appeals.
  • Create and manage social media campaigns, including daily content creation and engagement strategies.
  • Produce quarterly reports on social media engagement with analysis and recommendations.
  • Research and incorporate emerging social media tools into the communications plan.

Requirements

  • 1-3 years of experience in writing for public consumption and content creation.
  • Ability to simplify complex project information for diverse audiences.
  • Proficient in creating various content formats using images and videos.
  • Experience in self-recording and speaking in front of a camera.
  • Strong knowledge of local environmental issues and commitment to SEC's mission.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Proven success in growing social media accounts and using analytics tools.
  • Ability to use Canva for designing digital and printed materials.
  • Familiarity with Google Drive for organizing media assets and with WordPress.

Nice-to-haves

  • Graduation from a college or university with coursework in Journalism, Public Relations, Communications, Marketing, Environmental Science, or related fields.
  • Reading, speaking, and writing skills in Spanish.
