About the position

The Advancement Writer/Editor at the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) is responsible for composing, editing, and managing the production of a wide range of digital and print communications. This role supports the Advancement Office by effectively conveying the Museum's mission to diverse audiences through various official documents, proposals, reports, and communications materials. The position requires a blend of writing, editing, and project management skills to ensure high-quality outputs that align with the Museum's goals.

Responsibilities

  • Write or edit a variety of official documents including direct response materials, proposals, and reports.
  • Prepare briefings, background materials, and talking points.
  • Write speeches and text for visual presentations.
  • Oversee production of print pieces from draft creation through distribution.
  • Participate in working groups to plan and execute original communications products.
  • Develop content for information brochures and draft articles and reports.
  • Edit and prepare manuscripts on two levels: copy editing and substantive editing.
  • Establish policy for style, readability, and consistency for written products.

Requirements

  • Knowledge in techniques to design and develop written products that convey ideas and messages.
  • Knowledge of fundraising marketing and communications techniques including proposal writing and public relations.
  • Experience in proposal and publications development, preferably in a non-profit organization or marketing agency.
  • Skill in writing, editing, and translating complex material into accessible language.
  • Proficiency in the Chicago Manual of Style for formatting and citing sources.
  • Skill in interviewing and synthesizing information from various sources.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse individuals and groups.

Nice-to-haves

  • Proficiency in desktop publishing software applications.
  • Experience in conducting research projects and documenting findings.
