About the position

The Writer/Editor at Scripps College plays a crucial role in shaping the narrative and communication strategy of the institution. Reporting to the Senior Communications Manager and collaborating closely with the Creative Director and the Office of Marketing and Communications, this position is responsible for creating compelling multimedia content that aligns with the College's mission and enhances its brand visibility. The Writer/Editor will engage with various target audiences through storytelling that informs, inspires, and persuades, ultimately fostering a deeper connection with the College. This role is situated within the External Relations and Institutional Advancement (ERIA) division, which emphasizes the importance of effective communication in promoting the College's values and initiatives. The Writer/Editor will develop an editorial and video strategy that not only supports the College's mission but also elevates its reputation among external audiences. This includes crafting content for various purposes such as philanthropy, stewardship, engagement, and admissions, aimed at increasing audience engagement, donor contributions, and student enrollment. The position requires the production of diverse content types, including articles for Scripps magazine, updates for the College's external website, and marketing materials for admissions and philanthropy. The Writer/Editor will also serve as the editor and production manager for Scripps magazine, overseeing the entire production process from concept development to final execution, ensuring that all content adheres to the College's style and brand guidelines. In addition to content creation, the Writer/Editor will be responsible for educating the Scripps community on the College's style guide and brand messaging, ensuring consistency across all communications. The role also involves supporting the College's Principles of Community and Principles of Diversity, reflecting the institution's commitment to inclusivity and respect in all aspects of its operations. The Writer/Editor will be expected to perform other duties as assigned, contributing to the overall success of the marketing and communications team.

Responsibilities

  • Develop an editorial and video strategy that supports the College mission and increases awareness and reputation with external audiences.
  • Create content for philanthropy, stewardship, engagement, and admissions to enhance audience engagement, donor gifts, and student enrollment.
  • Produce content for various projects, including Scripps magazine, the College's external website, and marketing materials for philanthropy and admissions.
  • Serve as editor and production manager for Scripps magazine, proposing issue themes and managing production to execute two magazine issues per academic year on time and within budget.
  • Understand and implement the College's style and brand requirements, educating the Scripps community on the style guide and brand messaging.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or requested, supporting the College's Principles of Community and Principles of Diversity.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, English/humanities, or a related field.
  • Proven ability to write clear, engaging, and compelling copy in various styles appropriate for the College's target audiences.
  • Extreme attention to detail with strong copyediting, line editing, proofreading, and fact-checking skills.
  • Thorough knowledge of writing fundamentals, grammar, syntax, style, and punctuation.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Experience writing news or feature stories in a newsroom setting.
  • Strong analytical and critical-thinking skills, with the ability to generate and assess new ideas.
  • Ability to work independently or collaboratively as part of a team.

Nice-to-haves

  • Familiarity with a project management system.
  • Experience with AP and Chicago styles.

Benefits

  • Regular hours from Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Hourly rate between $28.00 and $34.00, based on various factors.
