About the position

North Carolina Public Radio-WUNC is seeking an Assistant Chief Engineer to join our team. This position is crucial in supporting the Chief Engineer in the daily operations of the Engineering Department. The Assistant Chief Engineer will play a vital role in maintaining and enhancing the transmission quality and reliability of our 12 licensed signals and 15 broadcast studios, which include 11 transmitter locations and our main studios in Chapel Hill and Durham, as well as two remote studio locations in Raleigh. The responsibilities of this position extend to ensuring the quality of the signal throughout the entire signal path, from the studios to over-the-air broadcasts and digital streams. The role also encompasses assistance with the maintenance of buildings and facilities, which includes managing emergency generators, HVAC systems, roofing, plumbing, locks, and security systems. The Assistant Chief Engineer will collaborate with a team of technical co-workers and contractors to create, maintain, and repair broadcast and audio systems, ensuring that WUNC continues to provide quality news, information, and entertainment programming to our diverse listening audience. This position reports directly to the Director of IT and Engineering, and the successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the Engineering Department, ensuring that all technical operations run smoothly and effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Chief Engineer in the day-to-day operations of the Engineering Department.
  • Maintain and improve the transmission quality and reliability of 12 licensed signals and 15 broadcast studios.
  • Ensure quality of signal for the entire signal path from studios to over-the-air and digital streams.
  • Assist with the maintenance of buildings and facilities, including emergency generators, HVAC systems, roofing, plumbing, locks, and security.
  • Collaborate with technical co-workers and contractors to create, maintain, and repair broadcast and audio systems.

Requirements

  • High School diploma/GED and four (4) years' related experience; or a Bachelor's degree in a related engineering discipline; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Working knowledge of facility wiring, grounding, and interconnect.
  • Knowledge of RF and High Voltage Safety.
  • Understanding of network security and electronic theory.
  • Proficiency in electronic mathematics and formulas, including arithmetic, geometry, and algebra.
  • Familiarity with Ohm's Law, VSWR, and Impedance.
  • Skills in soldering, electronic troubleshooting, and reading electronic schematic diagrams.
  • Experience with audio, RF, and network wiring and termination.
  • Ability to use test and monitoring equipment including multimeter, oscilloscope, spectrum analyzer, and power meters.
  • A valid driver's license and good driving record.

Nice-to-haves

  • Graduation from a four-year college and six (6) years of progressive experience in the maintenance and repair of radio production, broadcasting, computer, and transmitter systems; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • FCC General Class License and/or SBE Certification.
  • Knowledge of FCC Compliance.
  • Strong communication and documentation skills.
  • Project management skills.
