About the position
Under general direction from the facility Superintendent, perform a variety of duties involved in operations, process, control, maintenance, and sludge dewatering at the Wastewater Treatment Facility. This position requires a State of Montana ABC 3 Wastewater Operators Certification and in some cases, a minimum of a Class B CDL. Employees are eligible for Operator II after they have become a fully certified Class 1C Wastewater Operator by the State of Montana and completed two consecutive years at the Wastewater Treatment Facility Operator I position at a satisfactory performance level, and completed the requirements outlined in the City of Helena's Advancement Policy for Plant Operators.
Responsibilities
- Operate and instruct in the operation of all equipment within the complex mechanical secondary wastewater treatment facility.
- Perform rag and grit collection and removal, primary and secondary clarifier operation and maintenance, primary and secondary pumping operation and maintenance, bioreactor basin operation and maintenance, ultra violet disinfection operation and maintenance, two stage anaerobic digester operation and maintenance, non-potable water pump station operation and maintenance, non-potable irrigation system operation and maintenance, gravity belt thickener operation and maintenance, belt filter press operation and maintenance, engine generator operation, sludge pumping operation and maintenance, flow measurements, MPDES required sampling, sampling equipment operation and maintenance and receiving stream monitoring and maintenance.
- Operate the SCADA computer system and software to control facility functions.
- Calibrate and maintain all process monitoring equipment including dissolved oxygen monitor sensors, PH monitor sensors, temperature monitor sensors, oxidation reduction potential monitor sensors.
- Perform lab testing and analysis including tests of E. coli bacteria, volatile suspended solids, mixed liquor suspended solids, total suspended solids, biochemical oxygen demand, volatile acids, ammonia, total nitrogen, settleometer and micro examinations.
- Perform and process a variety of quality control tests including microscopic examinations, sludge volume index, monitor sludge blankets, pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen, and settleometer tests.
- Perform general janitorial duties of buildings and general landscape maintenance, mowing, trimming and weed spraying.
Requirements
- Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent.
- ABC 3 Wastewater Operator Certification.
- Advanced knowledge of the operations and maintenance of Helena's wastewater treatment facilities.
- Possession of a valid driver's license with acceptable driving record at the time of hire or ability to obtain a valid MT driver's license within six months of hire.
- Possession and maintenance of a valid Class B Montana Commercial Driver's License, if position requires sludge hauling for disposal.
