About the position

The Y Clubs/Teens Chess Instructor at the Bloomington-Normal YMCA is responsible for overseeing chess programs for youth, ensuring they meet their intended goals while exemplifying the YMCA's core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility. This role involves teaching chess terminology, game strategies, and providing individual and group instruction to youth participants, fostering a safe and engaging environment.

Responsibilities

• Oversee the entirety of Chess across both Y Clubs and Y Teens programs.
• Assist in the development and operations of Chess programs.
• Correctly use and teach appropriate terminology for the chessboard and pieces.
• Initiate and run practice and team-building activities related to chess.
• Provide individual and small-group instruction, adapting the curriculum to varying chess abilities.
• Create a welcoming and engaging environment for participants.
• Plan and execute Y Clubs/Y Teens plans tailored to youth participants.
• Submit the chess curriculum to the Director of Youth Development for approval.
• Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, including ADA accommodations.
• Maintain regular communication with Youth Development staff and the Director of Youth Development.

Requirements

• Ability to interact with children and teens of grades 3rd-9th.
• Ability to perform multiple tasks concurrently.
• Proficiency in understanding the developmental needs of youth.
• Proficient in Chess, including pieces and strategy.

Nice-to-haves

• High school diploma or equivalent experience (preferred).
• One to two years of related experience as a Chess instructor in youth programming (preferred).
• Ability to obtain CPR/First Aid, Mandated Reporter, and other relevant certifications.
• Fulfillment of state-specific hiring standards and completion of YMCA program-specific training.
• Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups from all social and economic segments of the community.
